Top MD not disturbed by vaccine announcement

The Yukon’s chief medical officer of health isn’t concerned about being left out of the first wave of available COVID-19 vaccines.

By Tim Giilck on December 8, 2020

Revised _ The Yukon’s chief medical officer of health isn’t concerned about being left out of the first wave of available COVID-19 vaccines.

During his weekly briefing Tuesday, Dr. Brendan Hanley touched on the announcement Monday that the federal government is purchasing 249,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine for 14 locations in Canada – none of which are in the Yukon or the North.

Distribution of that vaccine could begin sometime this month.

Echoing comments made Monday by Premier Sandy Silver, Hanley said he had no plans to lobby federal officials for early access to any of the vaccines that might become available in the near future.

“I haven’t been lobbying for the Pfizer vaccine because of the logistical difficulties,” he said following the briefing. “It’s a very limited release, it’s a dry run, and the Pfizer vaccine is designed for a large-population release.”

The Yukon has been recognized as a priority population, Hanley said, as have Indigenous communities, seniors and health care workers.

Those categories are all a significant part of the Yukon demographic, he noted.

The Pfizer vaccine requires the use of ultra-cold freezers, none of which are currently available to the Yukon government. While the freezers are small, the logistics of safely moving them, particularly to remote locations, is in question, he suggested.

“The freezers hold 975 doses, so you have to have a thousand people people ready to receive them, because you don’t want to waste any doses.”

Like Silver, Hanley said the Yukon is looking more toward the Moderna vaccine, which is a single-dose medication without the more-complicated requirement of the Pfizer product.

“So I’m not at all concerned,” Hanley said.

Both he and Silver said they’re confident more news of the vaccine distribution front is coming this week.

An announcement Tuesday by outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump that will bar any vaccines from being exported to other nations isn’t expected to have much of an effect on the process, a Yukon government official said.

“The federal government is leading procurement of COVID-19 vaccinations for all of Canada,” senior cabinet communications official Matthew Cameron said Tuesday afternoon.

“The Government of Canada is not concerned with the comments by President Trump and don’t expect it will have any meaningful impact on supply or Pfizer’s ability to meet its contractual obligations to Canada.

“As such, we’re not concerned that this will have impacts in Yukon.”

As of this morning, the COVID case counts in the Yukon are now at 58, according to Yukon.ca.

No information is available on the latest case.

Case 57 is located outside of Whitehorse, but Hanley wouldn’t disclose the exact location. It’s related to existing cases in the city.

Cases 55 and 56 are also city cases.

Hanley described the situation as an outbreak, but there is no clear indication of community spread as yet.

He was asked if a lockdown had been considered, such as the one Nunavut officials brought in to control the virus spread in Arviat and Whale Cove. He said the situation here does not warrant such a drastic move.

A full-scale lockdown is a potentially devastating action that should be reserved for the most dire of situations, he added.

“We believe in a proportionate response,” Hanley said. “We have not seen an explosion of cases, and we’re doing pretty well yet.”

He stressed Yukoners need to continue to concentrate on a few simple measures to control the spread of the virus.

He urged people to stay home if they are sick, particularly from work. Workplaces have been traced to the spread of several of the newest cases in recent weeks, Hanley said.

He also stressed the need to maintain a strict social bubble of approximately 10 people, and to continue to follow physical distancing guidelines and the Safe Six protocols.

With the Christmas season upcoming, many people might have more difficulty keeping up with these measures, but Hanley said they’re crucial to weather the next two weeks.

That will tell the tale if the current outbreak can continue to be brought under control, he said.

That doesn’t mean, though, that people should be discouraged from shopping or visiting restaurants or bars if they are careful to follow the protocols.

Bars and restaurants are potentially high-risk areas, and that’s why new measures to trace patrons who eat in are now in effect to make contact tracing easier.

“We should be patronizing local businesses as we always do,” Hanley said.

If necessary, further restrictions could be introduced. He said some are currently under consideration, but he provided no details.

Hanley and Silver said they hadn’t seen any indication of resistance to the new mask regulations. Nor had they heard of any fines being levied.

Masks don't work to stop Covid, why should an untested vaccine be any better? "Flu shots" never stopped the flu did they? All we're getting is more government placebo gaslighting that only the sheeple are believing.

Farr's Law. The disease outbreak will approximate a bell curve and will continue until herd immunity is achieved. One can distort the shape of the curve through lock-downs and other actions, but the total area under the curve will remain the same, until Herd immunity is achieved. Any so called medical expert or authoritarian politician thinking they know better, is displaying arrogant ignorance.

Lockdowns, masks and physical distancing do not stop a virus. They delay the spread somewhat. We were initially told the restrictions were imposed so the hospitals would not be overwhelmed. That has not happened in any Yukon hospitals or community clinics in the year since this was first detected.
Current Yukon situation 14-12-20
Total people tested 5,756
Confirmed cases 59 [very few, if any, required hospitalization}
Active cases 4 [None are hospitalized]
Recovered cases 54
Deaths 1 [ died from comorbidities with Covid, not FROM Covid]
Negative results 5,682 [ 98.7% and until recently one had to be symptomatic to get tested]
Pending results 15

That political arrogance has resulted in unwarranted restrictions not based on medical science.
This is nothing but petty despots exercising control because they have fearmongered their sheeple into accepting it.
We are being played without justification. Max Mack is correct.
Go celebrate a traditional Holiday season with friends and family and tell anyone who objects, to go pound sand where the sun don't shine. Enough is Enough !!

Silver’s first choice was the Umbrella Corporation from Raccoon City. However, Hanley said he had some concerns about about some of the side effects. Silver minimized those side effects as Liberals tend to eat their own anyway... Hanley paused...

I too don't think a delay in getting jabbed with the new vaccine is a big deal, perhaps I am lucky. I have never had a flu shot and I rarely get ill, if I do, I go to bed after eating a couple ASA tabs and in 24 hours I'm good again. I had a bout of the flu back in February and it seemed to be much stronger than what I am used to as it lasted about 10 days, so perhaps it was COVID but I'll never know unless they allow testing for those not displaying symptoms.

@Carter I will admit I am getting tired of all your BS! Yes you didn’t get the mayor job. Get over it!

This government is being about as transparent as mud. This is quite a spin from what they were saying a week ago. If we are not ready for the vaccine say so and tell the folks we have to wait for one that we can get freezers for! The Feds throw you under the bus on this so no use spinning it like this.

So, Dr Hanley prefers a vaccine made by a company that, previous to covid, has never manufactured any type of product that has passed any stage of clinical trial nor have they published any peer-reviewed studies. Hanley trusts Yukoners lives with what amounts to an investment firm that received millions from the Trump administration that will now produce a product using a vaccine technology never before used on humans.
Me first! Me first!

Here some other interesting news. Trump wants all vaccine made in the US to go to US people first, nothing for Canada or anyone else. Second $400 million doses for who and at what cost to tax payers? What is Trudeau doing now giving away billions of tax payers dollars? Yukoners are you fed up with so much BS coming at you?

Yukonners, we need to keep perspective. Yukon has seen exactly ONE COVID death. The rest of Canada has seen TWELVE THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED AND NINETY-FOUR. Isn't it a bit scummy to get all crybaby because we are not FIRST in line for the vaccine? Right now the vaccine is only going to people over 80, and the caregivers that work with them. There's gazillions of those down south, but probably not one Pfyser freezer full of them in Yukon.

He and Sandy don't care because they still get paid no matter how long we are under lockdown. Some people need to work and run businesses to get paid. This is so unbelievably tone-deaf and elites.

Yes - let's keep everybody on lockdown, restrictions and "safe seven" protocols because we "need the vaccine to 'beat' COVID".
But, our fearless leaders aren't going to push to have the vaccine right away.

Actions speak louder than words.
Well beyond time to end the fake emergency.

So how is this vaccine even approved if the list of ingredients isn't public yet!? What more do you folks need to know!? Absolutely mind boggling.

Great work Doctor Hanley and Yukoners generally. Let’s get this under control and enjoy Christmas.

Why are people in Old Crow more vulnerable then other communities?

The doc is right on this one. By a country mile. Well done Hanley, again. His decision is an accurate assessment of the logistical difficulty around the Pfizer option. Other jurisdictions will struggle with delivery and some will waste a ton of money in the process.

As I called for in the beginning of this thing, it would be nice to have a clear separation of factual information and politics. I don’t think the premier needs to be there. We didn’t want to see him in the beginning when things were dark. We especially don’t want to see him now associating himself with good news.

Sandy, learn your place. You are not a medical officer and should recuse yourself from factual press briefings by the medical officer. You taint the information by your presence. That I need to point this out less than one year from an election is a bit pathetic.

Yes, why hurry? Now that they have tasted absolute power, they certainly won't take any measure to speed up the moment they're forced to relinquish it. Why rush to inoculate 1000 persons? Better give the virus a chance to spread, that way they can keep controlling the masses as they please - we're such good sheeps, it's no effort at all - and keep the socioeconomic life of the territory at a perfect standstill for another 6 months or another year altogether... Why not?

Canada gas invested in over 400M doses of the vaccine.. think about that a moment. They already said they will be helping poorer nations first.. not sure why they are shocked by this, it's been in the news for weeks now..

Of course they haven't seen any resistance to the masks, it's because they don't hold PUBLIC meetings. Would be nice for the public to ask questions. But I'm sure they fear it will make them look uneducated as that's pretty easy to do.

I disagree with the good doctor on this one.
People in care facilities are best vaccinated ASAP and people older than 75 years and vulnerable people who live in Old Crow. All the groups I mention are very vulnerable.
