A familiar young voice around the Yukon is trying her hand at a national singing competition and needs the public's help.

Emily Ross has been chosen as a finalist for the singing competition the Virtual Next Star.

The online contest is being held in conjunction with the national TV show The Next Star on YTV.

Another young Yukoner — Madi Dixon — was a finalist on this year's season TV show.

"I started watching the show because of Madi,” Ross said in an interview last week.

"She made it all the way to the top 12. I'm so proud of her.”

Ross considered trying out for the TV show but summer plans got in the way.

"Honestly, I was going to audition for the actual show but I didn't want to miss soccer for the summer,” Ross says with a giggle.

So instead the 14-year-old recorded herself singing Valerie by Amy Winehouse and sent the tape into the show along with hundreds of other young Canadians.

"They gave us a list of songs to choose from,” Ross said. "I like that song and I like Amy Winehouse.”

Her video made it to the top six.

Now it's up to the public to vote for a winner.

The winner of the Virtual Next Star earns a round trip for two to see the TV show's live finale in Toronto, three nights' hotel accommodations and $500 in spending money.

Ross has performed at the Commissioner's Tea in Dawson City as well as the Frostbite, Frog Mountain, Rotary and Riverside music festivals.

She is the youngest member of Yukon Women in Music.

The public can go online to nextstar.ytv.com, and click on Virtual Next Star to see the videos and cast their vote.

The voting continues until 9 p.m. (Yukon time) Friday.
