The Yukon government is extending the waiving of tipping fees until Sept. 3 for brush, trees and clean wood brought to several rural landfills during normal business hours.

Those are the ones at Deep Creek, Marsh Lake, Mount Lorne, Tagish and Carcross.

Windstorms in late July created issues with windblown debris.

Originally, tipping fees were being waived from July 28 to Aug. 6.

The tipping fee holiday extension is meant to provide area residents with additional time to clean up downed trees and encourage the disposal of brush piles that could otherwise worsen wildland fire risks.

“Our government is happy to extend the waiving of tipping fees for Yukoners in the Southern Lakes region affected by windstorms,” Community Services Minister Richard Mostyn said Thursday.

“We hope it will continue to offer relief to residents as they clean up their properties.”

Tipping fees still apply for waste, including household waste, vehicles, scrap metals and construction material.

Disposing of untreated wood, uncontaminated brush or trees is normally $5/m3.

Why does the government want us to pay $5/m3 to FireSmart our rural properties?

These people have enjoyed a fees holiday since they moved into the area.

There should never be fees for pickup truck or trailer load of brush going to the landfill. The more we clean up our property in rural areas, the better off it is for everyone in the community.

Now our dump says to put all so-called soft plastic in the dumpster no glass no cans. Charge for compost and charge for anything reusable, reduce reuse recycle is going to cost you. The whole spirit of recycling is gone down the toilet
