HOUSING CALLED THE NUMBER ONE ISSUE – Lisa Vollans-Leduc, the territory’s NDP candidate for the Sept. 20 federal election, speaks to members of the media Tuesday afternoon in Whitehorse.

‘This is a fabulous opportunity’: NDP candidate

Lisa Vollans-Leduc says she’s eager to get to work to fight for the MP seat longtime Liberal Larry Bagnell is vacating.

Lisa Vollans-Leduc says she’s eager to get to work to fight for the MP seat longtime Liberal Larry Bagnell is vacating.

Vollans-Leduc is the newly-announced NDP candidate for the Yukon seat.

At a media conference Tuesday afternoon, she said she is looking forward to battling the other candidates for the position.

Vollans-Leduc is a political neophyte fighting her first major campaign, but is also a longtime advocate for social justice causes.

She’s lived in the Yukon for more than 18 years now, and is employed with the territorial Health and Social Services department. She has been a labour and human rights activist for 25 years. Vollans-Leduc's currently on leave as she campaigns.

Vollans-Leduc said she believes she has a realistic shot at winning the seat, despite her inexperience.

“Of course I do; thanks for the question. Canadians and Yukoners are ready for a change. I’m ready and I’ve never been more excited for anything in my life.

“This is a fabulous opportunity, and I think Yukoners will benefit with me as their MP,” Vollans-Leduc said.

In a combative tone, she said she’s looking forward to facing off with the other candidates.

“I’m 44 years old, and the NDP’s values line up so strongly with my own. I didn’t have to search any other political party,” she added.

“I’ve supported the NDP campaigns for the last three federal elections, and now I’m on this side of it.

“I also supported the NDP through the territorial election. People first, and the NDP are on your side. That really resonates for me.

“I’m interested in being part of change for Canada.”

Vollans-Leduc added, “I worked as a youth advocate for 16 years, and then I moved into policy with Health and Social Services. I’ve spent my life getting here today, and when I ventured into a political position, it felt so right.

“I felt that flow, and I’m really looking forward to being an advocate for all Yukoners by being MP for the NDP.”

As soon as she learned she’d been approved to be the candidate, she said, “I went down Main Street, and the number one issue is housing. It’s so big, and we want to ensure people have a place to live.”

Vollans-Leduc said reconciliation is also an important priority to her.

“Working with youth in custody highlighted this for me, and I want to do something to move forward with reconciliation,” she told reporters.

Vollans-Leduc noted climate change is also huge for her.

“For the past month, I’ve been dealing with flooding. It’s a lot of work, and it’s due to climate change.”

She would know that, as a resident of the Marsh Lake area.

That puts her on a collision course with the Liberal candidate, Dr. Brendan Hanley, who is espousing the same ideas.

She is also facing the newly-announced Conservative candidate, Barb Dunlop, and independent candidate Jonas Smith – who ran as a Conservative in 2019.

The Green Party of Canada is slated to announce a candidate later this afternoon.

Vollans-Leduc didn’t sound at all intimidated by the challenge.

“I work hard,” she said. “I’m a tireless advocate. I don’t believe being Yukon MP just means I represent the people who voted for me. It’s all Yukoners. We have an obligation to Canadians.

“Where people are unhappy or are arguing, there is always a middle point you can get to that you can build on,” the candidate added. I will always look for that.

“I’m going to work really hard, and I understand the policy processes and how to communicate.

“I’m ready, and what I’m not ready for I’m interested in learning about. I won’t stop until I can have an answer,” she said.

I think the NDP should study this situation. Possibly a committee can be struck.

No thanks. I agree with Anie & Oya; I didn't scrimp & save all my working life to ensure I wouldn't be a burden in retirement, just to see it taken away by a modern day Robin Hood. For some of us who sacrificed to do this, it wasn't always easy. It didn't happen because we had high paying jobs with everything handed to us; it happened because we were motivated to do it. The genuinely poor I will help, but I prefer to decide where I donate my money, not have it ripped away by more taxes.

Anie's got it right. A vote for the NDP is a vote to pay more taxes so you can contribute YOUR hard earnings, YOUR financial success, to support those people who won't get off the couch and get a job. No thanks!

Yes it is the trendy look for tree huggers. They are hoping to cash in on the real workers and get an image change. Like that will never happen !

Yes, let us all weep for the landlords.
The fact that you can derive income from someone else's need to live is distasteful enough. Complaining because you can't hike the rent up to get as much as you can is just disgusting.

I'm glad someone has the opportunity to purchase that "income property."

The local NDP screwed us with the ill thought rental freeze--no support at all for them. So no, won't be voting for NDP. Let's get strong candidates/strong voter choices.

I personally will be voting NDP in order to get Trudeau out of the leadership position in the federal Liberals. Also, I am excited to see what Jagmeet Singh would do with a mandate.

"People first. And the NDP are on your side". Well, maybe. But if you have worked hard and done without some luxuries in your younger years, set aside your interests and hobbies in order to pursue a degree part time while still working, postponed parenthood until you could afford it, saved your money so as to pay your own way in retirement, and had a lot of good luck to help you attain success, then the NDP want to take most of your money away as a penalty for success.

If you think any of these neoliberals are "left of center," I would recommend you stop drinking the Culture War koolaid. The Overton window is an illusion.

They're all enthusiastic supporters of neoliberalism. Private investment, market-oriented solutions to social problems, and 1st solution to any budget constraints is cutting social programs. Every NDP government in the last 20 years has campaigned "left" then governed right. Hell, Singh was so enthusiastic last election, Trudeau actually flanked him from the left on numerous issues (not that he followed through on most of them, because who are we kidding).

I also like to stand for nothing except eternal compromise. Real winning strategy, that.

I didn’t mean to go on a personal rant. I am just tired of HSS giving a person a fish and not teaching them to fish. This whole welfare mindset.
Paying nearly 37% of tax off my income then another 5% at point of sale. Watching too many people abuse the system. Just have had enough of these type of bleeding hearts. Nothing personal towards Lisa.

Why would anyone vote NDP in a federal election? Just remember the few Federal NDPs MP we had and it is easy to see that was a wasted vote. The only MPs that done anything for the Yukon were Libs or Cons. They are the one forming any kind of Gov

Lisa, interesting move but answer some questions for Yukoners:
Why do you say housing is number one for Yukoners? But in fact the number one issue is serviced land to build houses on.
What does climate change mean to you and how is it effecting the Yukon?
How are you going to support lowering carbon 45% when 70% comes from trucking and tourists driving big motor homes up the highway to northern BC, Yukon Alaska and NWT?
What about seniors not getting help?
How does carbon tax help to stop climate change?
What about our dated education system in Yukon, how do you change it?
How about doctors and nurses leaving the Yukon?
What are you going to do with Canada's massive debt load. How are you going to fix it?
Tell Yukoners on how to create a sustainable economy in the Yukon.
With private sector there is no tax dollars to pay for things!!!

"Canadians and Yukoners are ready for a change". But not anymore Marxist Communist socialism. So, she and her refugee boss think they can pay off the trillion dollar plus national debt and 4 billion dollar deficit their Liberal comrade JT racked up for Canada by borrowing more. All the NDP and Liberals do is create ponzi schemes. So, to the young generation, I say, get ready for high taxes and lower living conditions in your future.

I felt betrayed by the NDP. Kate can lunch with Silver, Hanley can pat himself on the back. Jonas has done exactly what I would have done. No matter what anyone says here in the forums, an honest election, and I'm not 100% sure we get that, will tell the tale.

How can I politely put this???
Ahh, NO THANK YOU.
Coming from HSS, yeah, make housing your priority! The NDP just caused many of us previous landlords to sell our income properties. I can tell you I am glad to be out of that game and pay down my primary residence. Having contracted to repair many Yukon Housing units, both Social and Staff housing. I can’t take you seriously. I have to pay for my heat, and drive by these HSS units with open windows at -40c with the snow melted off the roof above the windows. I see them trashed in less then a year.
Too many horror stories and just lack of respect from many living in those units.
I’d wish you luck but it’s a win-win for you either way.
I can tell you that this gravy train the YTG and Federal employees get has to end. Getting a extra day off because of a stat holiday. Our inflation rate is at almost 4% and reality is it’s higher, we’re just behind the stats.
I’m only voting for someone who is going to create a Work for SA program. Call it on the job training or whatever. And implement a program so you get 2 years max SA then have to earn.
If not, get ready for the collapse of our dollar.
Houses are the price they are because of accumulating debt related. People need to stop borrowing so much.
Good luck everyone, see you on the other side.

The problem with NDP's platform is they need a never ending supply of money (kinda like Trudeau is printing money faster than any G7 country). NDP'ers are not grounded in fiscal reality.

“For the past month, I’ve been dealing with flooding. It’s a lot of work, and it’s due to climate change.”

If you wish to be elected, your first task is to conclusively prove this statement, as no proof currently exists of the correlation between carbon dioxide levels and an increase in mountain snowpack.
I also seem to recall we were told that by the year 2000, there would be no more snow......

Sure is huge.

Imagine if you lose (which of course you will) then you get to go back to your 80k plus guaranteed job - and if you by icicles forming hell you win then the next election you get turfed and you still get to go back to your 80k plus guaranteed job. Oh and yes, lest we forget of course the luxury severance pay you will get from the taxpayers. Either way you win - all of it courtesy from the taxpayer. Oh, and your promises, they won't make a hill of beans because the NDP will not form the government.

Yes we are ready for a change but not the one you and your buddy Hanley is offering that is for sure. One leans the other props them up. All three government candidates are left of centre. The only one right of centre is Jonas...
