Think again about travel: YG

The Yukon government is asking people to re-think any travel plans they might have.

By Whitehorse Star on July 8, 2022

The Yukon government is asking people to re-think any travel plans they might have.

In an advisory issued late this morning, the government stated, “The Yukon is currently experiencing many emergencies.

“Wildfires and flooding have triggered evacuation alerts in several Yukon communities and campgrounds, and have led to numerous road closures and washouts.

“The territory has been further challenged by widespread telecommunications interruptions and poor air quality.

“Yukoners and visitors to the territory are being asked to seriously consider their travel plans,” the statement says.

“This is for their own safety, and for the safety of emergency responders, residents in impacted areas, and the movement of essential supplies and equipment.”

The statement added: “The Government of Yukon provides the most up-to-date information available at the links below, but the situation on the ground or waterways could differ from what’s available online.”

For current wildfire information, go to Yukon.ca/get-wildfire-updates or call YG’s information line at 393-7415.

For active advisories and alerts, including evacuation alerts, flood warnings and air quality advisories, go to https://Yukon.ca/emergencies.

Always check Yukon511.ca before travelling by road, the government advised.

“Emergency responders and community residents are working long hours to keep the Yukon safe. If you must travel, here’s how you can help.”

The government advises:

  • Expect extended delays and long waits on roadways. Always have a grab-and-go bag, including extra food and water, in your vehicle.

  • Do not interfere with emergency response operations and follow all instructions from officials.

  • Respect any closures or advisories communities have in place. Do not travel unless you absolutely have to, especially to areas under evacuation alerts.

  • Be as self-sufficient as possible. Supplies and resources are limited in communities. Bring everything you need, such as groceries, extra gas, cash and chargers for the duration of your travel.

“Understand that the situation could change quickly,” the government said. “Be prepared to change your plans if required.”

How many “Clownes” can you stuff in a car? on Jul 14, 2022 at 9:56 am

In response to CT Clowne on Jul 11, 2022 at 8:48 am:

What does a Liberal supporter/apologist sound like people? Does anyone want to take a guess? A: Nonsensically hyperbolic creature with fascistic motivations that contradict the usual associations with Liberalism… For example; War is peace, slavery is freedom… Good answer, very close people. Doublespeak is definitely an indicator of the Liberalism-Fascism. But, I just want to clarify though that while Liberals use these as self-defensive strategies their ultimate aim is to secure power. To them:

“Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing.”

So, in response to your supposition that:
“All those complaining about government of any stripe, try going to live in NK, China, Saudia Arabia and see what the lack of free state looks like! Such whiny people here with too much time on their hands.” I say:

You have no clue what you are talking about and your cavalier indifference is a symptom of the problem. A very real manifestation of the Orwellian ideal strategy - Dissembling under the glow of a gaslight… Where Liberals and fascists do their best work.

Hence the assault on history, language, expertise, and the resulting chaos in the great upside down. Trudeau would remove every last challenge to his rule if he could, so would Silver, and their minions of the NDP would sell your freedom for a little more of their own - A truly Faustian bargain.

@JC
By your words my first impression of you is that you are another of the Liberal crowd who freely criticize others for not thinking, behaving or otherwise being the same as you. I suspect you may be following the example of our PM who has said many Canadians have 'unacceptable views" and by that judgement we are not as good as he and his ilk may be. Elitism on display, pure and simple.
I suspect that the power of leadership has gotten to the PM where he believes he is above all others and now sports a messia complex the trucker convoy would need two trips to haul away.
As a nation we have a variety of views and each is worthy of discussion, but the pig-headed Liberal attitude of being the only correct viewpoints and the related name-calling to opponents displays their lack of maturity and unwillingness to debate matters like adults.

Didn't YG just give the tourism industry more funding? Now they tell everyone to not come. I foresee another bailout soon.

I agree! Every time I see one of your posts I feel the same way… But I am not inclined to blame the Star… Perspective is motivated so you might want to clean the gutters of your own mind and step out of the solipsistic shyt-storm…

Well, Silver is enjoying his trip that he told you not to take in Victoria today, isn't that cute? Your territory is burning Sandy, and the people don't think much of you either.

Wow.... people love to complain here, if people put all their vitriol into making the Yukon a better place to live among their neighbors, this place would even be better than it is now. All those complaining about government of any stripe, try going to live in NK, China, Saudia Arabia and see what the lack of free state looks like! Such whiny people here with too much time on their hands.

Emergency situations bring out the best and the worst in people. Much of it is because people do not prepare for when things hit the fan and wait until the last moment to react. Fires and floods have been a part of the Yukon landscape longer than most of us have been alive, so there is no excuse for not doing what you need to do to keep you and yours safe. Government through the Emergency Measures Organization provides information on how to prepare for dangerous situations that are common. Government emergency information to the public and media used to be much better before they adopted Twitter and similar social media to communicate, local radio should be utilized more for updates and new alerts. Thanks to all the crews working in these extreme conditions, your efforts are appriciated.

The same people on here complaining about this will be first to belly up to the trough demanding government bailouts for any "acts of god".

"I built my house out in the woods/on a flood plain - but I want the taxpayers to pony up if a fire or flood damages it"
"Down with government! (that is until I take a financial hit and then I want them to pay me)"

If GY had a theme song:

'Cause you're hot then you're cold
You're yes then you're no
You're in then you're out
You're up then you're down
You're wrong when it's right
It's black and it's white…

Hey Yukon LIBERAL government
Many of us are very tired of the nanny state and it's complete bulls**t.
Stop telling alleged free people what to do, and go back to pissing the next few generations of money away displaying your facade of virtue.

...as liberals do!

Thing is when you cry wolf for so long... no one listens.. however, they HAVE been "warning" us for 3 year now about "potential of forest fires", but don't worry folks, they have the tech to extinguish the fires VERY quickly via atmospheric aerosols..

Who are the public enemies disliking everyone's comments? Liberal liability says what? Says nothing. Contributes nothing. Is nothing. Bunch of ineffectual Canezuelans. You don't like it? Do something about it. If you survive us that is.

Tone deaf much? Two years of lockdowns and reduced travel due to COVID (not saying that wasn't warranted), and now the government tells people to stay away now that we're in post-pandemic? Wow.
