MAKING THE BEST OF A SETBACK – Luann Baker-Johnson talks about the loss of her tools – some with sentimental value – at the Lumel Studios site this morning.

Theft victim takes glass is half-full attitude

“You take a deep breath and you build.”

By Aimee O'Connor on September 15, 2015

“You take a deep breath and you build.”

That is Luann Baker-Johnson’s mantra since discovering early Sunday morning that her construction storage container had been broken into and almost all of the tools inside had been stolen.

A construction crew had been working on what will eventually be a hot-glass studio, on the old Motorways trucking site at Keish and Front streets.

Baker-Johnson told the Star this morning how she had believed her storage container was the “Fort Knox” of storage containers.

The crew had been organized with the tools, having placed them all in baskets and boxes in the container – making it an easy job to take them out and away.

The door to the container had been broken, and all of the tools had been taken.

The only exceptions were two saws, which she suspects were left because the culprit would have had an already-full vehicle.

She estimates the cost of the stolen tools to be about $6,000.

The hot-glass studio project has had its share of hurdles to overcome since the property was purchased in 2013.

Remediation work had to be done to get the soil at a point where building could start.

Baker-Johnson and her husband, Mel Johnson, went to city council for help earlier this year, when they needed a wider water valve for the line going into their building – a problem they’re still working to fix.

The future Lumel Studios has been a dream of the couple’s for a while now – but it has not been quashed by thieves.

With the help of local contractor and friend Randy Weibe, the crew has replacement tools from a different construction site of his.

Weibe decided to join the couple on the project as their contractor.

The “Lumel crew,” as Baker-Johnson calls it, consists of artists and glassblowers who are helping build the studio.

“It’s a joint project, which is not normal,” she laughs.

Baker-Johnson said several people have contacted her and her daughter offering to donate tools to the cause.

As for whether the tool thievery will stall the project’s completion date, Baker-Johnson is holding her head up.

She said it won’t be ready by October anymore, but they are shooting to be finished before the Christmas holidays.

She looks at the event positively, asking herself how she might be able to get people who might commit similar crimes in the future on her glass-blowing bench, learning something more productive.

“I might meet this person or people in the future, and we are going to have a long conversation,” she laughs.

But until then, the tools will be replaced and the construction of the studio will push on.

“We are not letting anything stand in our way,” she said.

“This is a wonderful project and it will be built.”

MarkS...yes you would think good solutions to our sty douching.
Report to whom? Malfeasance enforcement crews?
This is a result of decades of hug a thug via the courts, racist laws, EVERY level of government sitting on their hands via the PC crusade...I could drone on..."regurgitate" the message if you will.
Our town is a politically correct cesspool that seems to have lost their collective minds. Zealots distracted with eco-causes based on pandering instead of washing the filth off our streets.
What is more important of an issue...for ya'll?
Recycling and car shaming to get us on the bus...
How much more of our cash SIMA gets as well as other special interests...
Bodies piling up around town....
Puking pissing drunks staggering around DAILY.
Getting killed in traffic by one of our many many village idiots...
Will we get a swank new city hall...

This place reminds me more of Regina or Winnipeg these days Vs. our wee "wilderness city" ... local dysfunction but manageable level.
Now? A sty full of political correct blowholes rife with narcissistic attitudes willfully blind to the decay our town HAS experienced.

So based on the number of down votes to some of these comments, I'd say there are at least four people either involved or sympathetic to these break ins...

Time to fill some shotty shells with rock salt, throw on some camo and start a surveillance patrol. An ass full of salt is a helluva deterrent.

Its time to deal with B&Es, drunks and drug issues and very bad driving habits and all those other nagging issues which have made our town an ugly place.
Surely someone can observe and report these crimes. Let's get going on this for it seems to be getting worse!

Yukoner1- One small correction there, a charge has been laid and a suspect is in custody for the Brandy Vittrekwa murder. The suspect is a youth, so he can't be named. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/youth-15-charged-with-2nd-degree-murder-in-death-of-brandy-vittrekwa-1.3053898

They also made an arrest and laid charges in the murder of Tanner Sinclair, so that's 2 out of the last 4; the most recent being only a couple weeks old. A significant enough difference from what you said to be worth making a note of.

It's time for some heat to be put on the Minister of Justice, Brad Cathers. YTG pays the RCMP for policing services in Yukon and it's pretty evident that they're doing a piss poor job.
At least 3 murders (in the last 18 months) without a suspect nor charges
A drive by shooting with video evidence, no suspect nor charges
A thriving drug scene (nice work on the prosecution of this week's acquittal - NOT!)
Rampant break and enters and thievery (12 vehicles at the airport this week!)

Lets start seeing some results!

Someone steals this stuff.. but someone else buys it. Buying a couple of thousand dollars worth of tools from a 20 year old has to be a waving flag.
I got robbed, it's a painful invasion of privacy and safety. Every time there is a bump in the night I get a week's worth of cardio.. Who is buying these tools??

OR..maybe someone from Alberta or BC is here with a U-Haul, buying for dirt all the items these young crack heads can steal and taking them out to sell somewhere else?
In any event, I am so sorry for my little peaceful community...that isn't anymore.

Good old Whitehorse. Had that container been next to Starbucks over by Wal-Mart that never would have happened. But that's ok we should have a liberal or NDP government so then when we get robbed the thief can also go pick up a check from the gov

Not The Whitehorse I Knew on Sep 15, 2015 at 3:22 pm

What in the H--- is going on in Whitehorse? Who is doing stuff like this? A lot of people must know who these people are who did this and also the types who have been breaking into vehicles, etc. if you know who did this and say nothing you are just as bad as they are. Remember what comes around goes around and it will only be a matter of time before your actions catch up with you.
