The damage: ‘I have never seen anything like it’

ATCO Electric Yukon has completed the cleanup from last Sunday’s fierce windstorm that blew down large trees in the Tagish area, some of them landing on electrical lines.

ATCO manager Tony Badry said in an interview this morning crews wrapped up the cleanup Tuesday.

Power has now been restored to the 400 or so customers living in Tagish, with the exception of those living on Pennycook Lane.

Power to Pennycook Lane was expected to be restored this afternoon, he said.

Badry said five crews have been focused on the work, going 16 hours a day.

While the ATCO manager said he could not say just how many trees came down, he did say dozens. Many big trees outside of the right-of-way came down, he added.

Removing the larger trees can be quite a job, he said.

Environment Canada recorded wind speeds of 75 kilometres per hour on Saturday in Whitehorse and 60 kilometres on Sunday.

Badry said that doesn’t mean wind speeds didn’t exceed 60 km/h Sunday outside of Whitehorse; it’s just that they were not captured by Environment Canada because it does not have the equipment outside of Whitehorse.

Tagish resident Tim Lee told the Star this morning he had one large tree come down on his property along Taku Boulevard.

As you move closer toward the lake shore, he said, there is much greater destruction.

“I have never seen anything like it,” he said. “They were hit pretty good.”

He said there were power poles that fell to the ground.

Lee applauded the work by the ATCO Electric crews.

“That was a big job those guys did,” he said. “They worked hard.”

Tagish recreation director Tara Leduc estimates hundreds of trees came down. Some were broken off and others were pushed down, she said.

“It was probably 15 minutes of chaos that did most of it,” she said.

She said the temperature dropped 12 degrees in 15 minutes. The clouds turned black and the hail that came down then turned to rain.

“I can tell you ATCO was amazing,” she said. “There were fantastic crews out.”

The fact there were no injuries was incredibly lucky, she said.

Leduc said the Tagish Fire Department was also amazing.

For the last couple of days, you’ve heard generators running and chainsaws being operated, she said.
