Current hot temperatures are forcasted to continue throughout the week, leading officials to issue a territory-wide ban on all fires.
"The ban is a go, and it applies to all campgrounds and campfires, including those in territorial camp grounds," George Maratos, spokesman for Wildland Fire Management, told the Star at 1:15 this afternoon.
Previously, the ban extended to permitted fires in regions where wildfire danger ratings were deemed moderate or higher and for campfires outside of territorial or national park campgrounds.
Beginning at 1 p.m. today, it is forbidden to make a fire anywhere in the Yukon until further notice. Officers from fire management and parks will be monitoring the situation to ensure people heed the ban.
"We've had little precipitation in recent days and the forecast is for conditions to continue ... it would be nice to apply our resources to fires already burning and lightening starts," Maratos added.
Currently, there are 66 wildfires burning in the territory, 25 of which were human caused.
