The Yukon government has made a $25,000 donation to help with relief efforts in response to the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.

The donation was provided to the Canadian Red Cross to support its work with the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement in Afghanistan and around the region.

The money will be used to help the Red Cross and Red Crescent in Afghanistan in and around the region to provide support to people hit hard by multiple humanitarian crises, including conflict, extreme drought and ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Support may include health care and relief supplies for individuals and families, displaced populations and those experiencing food insecurity.

Funds will also be used for immediate and ongoing relief efforts, long-term recovery, resiliency and preparedness for future events in and around impacted regions, including consequential events related to the current crises.

“The Yukon stands with the people of Afghanistan during these turbulent times,” Premier Sandy Silver said Tuesday.

‘Thank you to the Canadian Red Cross for their efforts to relieve suffering and bring critical aid to vulnerable Afghans.”

Yukoners who want to help can donate to the Red Cross Afghanistan Humanitarian Crisis Appeal online or by calling 1-800-418-1111.

“Right now, millions of people in Afghanistan need humanitarian support, as the country is faced with a complex crisis, creating unimaginable turmoil for families who are already doing everything they can to survive,” said Pat Quealey, vice-president, Canadian Red Cross, British Columbia and the Yukon.

“The Canadian Red Cross is grateful for this contribution from the Government of Yukon to provide critical assistance to the people of Afghanistan.”

Josey Wales @"Humanitarian crisis since the 7th century. Completely false. Your very own fake version of history. Is this some form of deflection of humanitarian crisis of residential schools?

Groucho d' North@ "Am I my brothers keeper?" Cain butchers Abel, a poor choice of Old testament quote given the circumstances. There are no people in Canada starving to death with no social assistance. And Whitehorse is falling over backwards to accommodate the homeless in decent digs. $25000 is a drop in the bucket, the size of one seniors low income pension with supplementary benefits + for one year. In other words Social Assistance for one person plus including rent. Big Deal for Canada's poor.

And how do you define "home" Groucho? Is it your block, your neighbourhood, your town, territory, region, country? Is a starving child less worthy by distance? Is an injured youth more worthy of your compassion the closer they happen to live near where you happen to live?

Am I my brother's keeper? If so I would much rather work to help Canada's homeless and poverty-stricken before we send more money to war torn nations, that should be the UN's job. Too many Canadians are living under tents and tarps in community parks with their children, and they are suffering in many ways. Charity begins at home.

"And who is my neighbor"? Every man, to whom we have an opportunity of doing good. Time to resurrect our traditional Christian values in the face of the evil Taliban hypocrites, thieves, robbers, and liars, trying to justify themselves by laws based on hatred.

YEESH - what a bozo thing to do.

The Whitehorse landlords who had their rent increases dropped to 1 % deserve this money FAR more.

From team SS...

Anyone else think it odd the SS cannot stand with the people of Canada during our turbulent times? Nor can lil’ Castro in Ottawa?

As our national flag has had serious erectile dysfunction since June 23, 2021. Our flag should be hung upside down at full staff or replaced with a Red Ensign.

Our flag...needs a good yankin, all the way up that pole.
Nope...team SS, has a boss. Not a Hugo Boss, but someone he must answer to.
And that lil potato, well he has a certain degree of admiration for the CCP for their ability to turn their economy around with their basic dictatorship.

Who knows maybe by Christmas we may have the CCP flag up on a pole

Ya Ya Ya...
I think you should put that Chump change toward something better here!
I spent nearly 20 months of my Military Career there and nothing will ever change unless you have the Stomach and ROE to make the change and that appears to be over.
They would cut any of your throats in a heart beat and think nothing of it.

Huh!? Pretty sure 25K can be spent a LOT better here, at home, in Whitehorse, Yukon, CANADA. Where was the outrage for the past 20 years bombing the shit out of that country? Right.. Silence..
