TOLD TO CLEAR OUT – The owners of the Jamieson’s Building are putting up evicted tenants in alternative locations.
An order by Whitehorse fire chief Kevin Lyslo to vacate tenants of the old Jamieson’s Building is under appeal with the territorial fire marshal.
An order by Whitehorse fire chief Kevin Lyslo to vacate tenants of the old Jamieson’s Building is under appeal with the territorial fire marshal.
Fire marshal Dennis Berry told the Star this morning his department is conducting its own inspection to determine whether to rescind, modify or affirm the order.
Members of the fire marshal’s office began conducting their own inspection Friday and were continuing today, he said.
Berry said as it is, the owners of the building have complied with the order to vacate tenants.
A couple of tenants expressed frustration Friday with what they said was very short notice, as few as 24 hours in some cases, such as in the case of Kelly Kormos.
Kormos received an official notice last Thursday afternoon telling him he would have to be out Friday.
The owners of the building are putting up tenants in other locations.
Kormos said in his case, he’s being relocated to the Family Hotel, with the owners of Jamieson’s footing the bill for a month.
Kormos said he’s wondering what he’ll do after a month.
With such short notice, he said, he may not be able to save enough money from his job to put together first and last months’ rent in time, even if he can find a place in the next month.
“I am not very happy, and I am looking for compensation,” he said.
Kormos produced a letter he was given last Thursday afternoon from the building’s owners saying he would have to be gone Friday.
Some residents who are on social assistance were notified last week, though there was some uncertainty because other tenants had not received any notice, he said.
Kormos said he understands if there are safety issues, there are safety issues. But such short notice is unacceptable, he said.
While the official owner is a numbered company, the Star has learned the property is owned by Arcrite Northern and TSL Contractors.
The owners, however, are out of town and unavailable for comment, the Star has been told by office staff at TSL.
The Jamieson’s Building dates back to the 1950s.
Lyslo said the structure underwent a routine inspection in November 2015.
Concerns were raised and a more in-depth inspection was conducted by the city’s fire prevention office, as is the case when routine inspections identify issues, Lyslo explained.
He said the fire department issued the owners an order on Jan. 7 requiring the removal of the tenants by last Friday.
While the fire chief declined to get into specifics, he did say the order is in keeping with the city’s mandate to ensure all residents have safe housing.
In most cases where issues with fire safety are raised, the fire department and building owners are able to work through the deficiencies and bring the accommodations up to code, he said.
Lyslo said the Jan. 7 order to vacate the tenants was issued because it was felt the owners of Jamieson’s would be unable to address the deficiencies by last Friday.
That afternoon, however, some residents were busy packing up their possessions and preparing to leave as members of the fire marshal’s office were conducting their inspection as required under the appeal process.
Pat Living of the Department of Health and Social Services said this morning the department successfully relocated seven of its social assistance clients who were living at Jamieson’s.

I'm very surprised this building has not burned down eons ago. It truly does need replacing but the tenants could be given a little more than a month's gratis elsewhere. I think 3 month's compensation is in order for the ones that pay.
As an aside note I would retro-actively like to thank Jean Jamieson who would kindly let me warm up my oxford covered feet during cold winter months while I hitched home after visiting my girl friends place downtown.

Arcrite ain't right.
Don't blame Arcrite and the other owner. They only recently bought the lots and the old Jameson's. The owner of Arcrite is NOT a slumlord. As sourdough commented below, that finger can be firmly pointed at the old owner. One can also look at the old owners current buildings they still own for the kind of standard he keeps things in; Casa Loma, the old long building they rent beside it. I imagine Arcrite will tear it down, as they have zero interest in;
a) Being slumlords
b) Having the hassles associated with renting to residents

That building has been run down since the 50's. It has barely changed over the years. Why all the excitement now?

Q. Which Yukon Party stalwart/insider owned this building and the adjacent lot for years and years and only JUST sold it? Why only NOW is it being cracked down on??
Oh the intrigue....

That place isn't fit to live in. It's disgusting and should have been condemned and demolished years ago.

Years ago there were a bunch of cozy shacks heated by wood or oil stoves with crooked stove pipes coming out the roof where many who didn't fit into the 9 to 5 work schedule could live happily, independently and cheaply. How about we try that again as it worked and didn't require millions of dollars and an army of bureaucrat to operate.

Good it's about time. They gave the owner over 2 years to get it up to shape. I hope they start doing it to other places.

reality check on Jan 26, 2016 at 4:01 pm
I think the city and territory would love to shut down all kinds of housing due to code violations of one sort or another, but the reality is that not many people are willing to be landlords, and those that are generally do not want to provide rental properties with all the t's crossed and i's dotted, at Social Assistance rates, to most Social Assistance clients.
If the authorities were to really go after the landlords who are providing SA housing in town they'd probably shut down at least half of the units currently available. And the true cost of government owned social housing is probably 3x or more the rate that is being paid to private landlords.
The Yukon Government has been trying to 'bribe' landlords into building more low income rental housing for a few years now, but it isn't very attractive to the public to see million dollar give-aways happening with few strings attached.
The problem is a bit complicated. But there must be a bit of slack in the system right now because this is the second place in a week that has been 'investigated' - the other being the apartment building in Riverdale where the SCAN deal went down.

If the building is in such bad shape how come the business's are still allowed to be there? More war on the poor but we can't touch business's. How about P&M. Years of illegally occupying a spot but more time given to straighten things out. Poor people in a tenement, out the next day. Obviously the law applies to all equally!

Dearest "Arcrite Ain't Right" ... and consider that it was Health and Social Services under the YP that was pumping money into this slum by way of social assistance rent payments for all these years. Probably to the tune of $6,000 a month. If the newspapers would do a bit more digging they may be surprised to find a number of very interesting connections.

Knowing Arcrite and the owner of said company there is no doubt he will demolish it at some point. I believe he owns the new building going up behind Jamiesons. I would like to say what I think of Arcrite and the owner but it would get censored. One of the last "old" buildings in Whitehorse.

What is interesting is that the Director of Social Services / Assistance was either knowingly paying the rent for poor people, to house them in essentially illegal condemned accommodations ... or never bothered to check out the place in advance.

The owners of this building have known for years about the problems. They didn't do anything and now blame the city for finally acting in the interest of people's safety. How can the same owner claim he can't fix Jamison's and build a huge expensive building behind it. When are we going to stop protecting slumlords in this town?!???!?

What?, there are more then 7 Tenants living there? Probably 10.That is a good Income for the owners, paid of course by You and Me. Social Housing indeed.
If People cannot live there the building has to be demolished. Burn That Sign {Pawns Stars} first. This is an old and ugly Building. Thanks Vince for that great Shot.

Since the new landlord tenant act, shouldn't the tenants receive two months notice ? Or at least that long of paid accommodation elsewhere?

Social services has relocated seven of the SA people living there? And others are being put up at the expense of the landlords? How many people were living in this old building? That's quite a little business going on. I had no idea there were apartments in there.
