FIRE NEAR TANKS DOUSED – This was the scene this morning of Tuesday night’s tarpaulin fire near the propane tanks outside the Walmart store. It appears a temporary tank has been set up for propane.

Tarp was burning near store’s propane tank

A Tuesday evening fire at the propane tanks outside the local Walmart store is not being treated as suspicious, but the cause is still under investigation, Whitehorse Fire Chief Jason Everitt said today.

A Tuesday evening fire at the propane tanks outside the local Walmart store is not being treated as suspicious, but the cause is still under investigation, Whitehorse Fire Chief Jason Everitt said today.

Everitt said the fire department received the call at 9:18 p.m. Tuesday.

There was a full response by the fire department, he told the Star, with two fire trucks and the command vehicle.

Initial information suggested a propane tank was on fire. When firefighters arrived, they noticed it was a tarp that lay around the tanks that was ablaze, he said.

Everitt said part of the tarp was still draped on a tank.

Kudos go out to the staff of Walmart who responded to the alarm by first of all making sure everybody in the store stayed safe, he said.

Everitt said Superior Propane is assisting with the investigation.

“They understand the mechanics of the system better than anybody, and they are looking into it to see what might have caused that,” he said.

There many parts to the system that could have possibly failed, he said.

Everitt noted propane tanks are made out of steel and are very solid.

They are also fitted with an emergency pressure valve that will blow open if the tanks are under to much heat, but that did not happen in this case, he said.

There must be some kind of Murphys Law. If anything is going to happen it's going to wait for busiest, coldest day of the year.

Well that looks and sounds absolutely terrifying. Maybe I've seen too many movies, but our Walmart nearly ended up being the first one in space.

This is not suspicious.....why just last week I saw some matches sputtering in the snow bank and two tarps catch on fire!

It seems pretty obvious to me what happened, funny that the fire chief is still investigating. I wonder if maybe the heater that is needed to keep propane from gelling below -40 had anything to do with it? After the big push to get everyone converted to propane or electric heat, and off that planet killing diesel it certainly wouldn't look good if they reveal flaws in the master plan. I wonder how long they can keep the truth from coming out? Lucky nobody was killed.

Anyone who has lived in severely cold climates and deals with propane tanks and keeping propane flowing in these temperatures knows exactly what happened here.

No surprise. This is what happens when criminals get away with everything. No consequences.

So basically, someone covered over the tanks with a tarp, put a heater under there, the tarps caught fire, and either they're not telling us about the heater, or someone took it away in order to hide it

Possibly an overheating vaporizer. Maybe.
