Take care of hot pets, city cautions

The Bylaw Services Department is reminding local residents to take precautions during the current hot weather.

By Whitehorse Star on July 31, 2018

The Bylaw Services Department is reminding local residents to take precautions during the current hot weather.

“Check on animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat,” the city said last week. “Make sure they have plenty of cool water. Do not leave pets in vehicles.

“If you see an animal in distress in a parked vehicle, please note the licence plate, vehicle colour, make and model and ask nearby businesses to find the owner to return to their vehicle immediately.”

If the owner cannot be located, a call should be made to the city’s trouble line at 667-2111.

I phoned bylaw about a distressed dog in a hot car. After 20 minutes when the lady came back to her car, bylaw still hadn't shown up. Useless.

Hey CoW elites and unaccountables, we will care for our pets...you take some care....a spore at least...for our taxes you piss away with zeal.
Seems like maybe we need a spay and neuter clinic run badly, as the wards are breeding feral humans like mice.
....but yes of course heat and how it effects us all, is the most pressing issue in our decaying community.
Not juvenile delinquents free ranging, herds of drunks grazing, blind stupid folks trying to drive, ideological fools steering our once great ship....right into the rocks but only enough life jackets for the nobles on board?
Naaaaaaaaah,
I know it will never happen, but bylaw needs defunding...as it is a financial hemorrhage and more of a breeding ground for bureaucrats whom regurgitate PC talking points and civic entitlement causes.
“Striving for perfection” indeed, a perfect engineered mess.
I think maybe our nobles and their minions might have been left in a hot car as children, some anyway....as there must be a reason why they are so outta touch and clueless.

We park in the shade, leave the windows half open, there's water to drink, and don't leave for more than a half hour. Anyone who tries to break in for any reason is going to discover that Dog does not take kindly to people trying to take his truck.

I will bust your window out of your vehicle and take your pet to the animal shelter if you are stupid enough to leave your pet in the car or truck! You wouldn’t sit in a parked car with the windows up in the hot sun! So don't make your animals do it! Unless you own a lizard!

If I would see a dog in the car in the sun when it is hot out, I'd be sure to yell a few times, to alert possible owner near the lot. if not, the glass gets broken. Sorry. You need to be able to care for your pets. A window can be replaced.

@Raine
I agree with you on your comment about the city wasting taxpayers' money. CoW's tax-and-spend philosophy must stop.

But, I disagree that dogs in hot cars are an issue. There hasn't been a spate of dogs dying in hot cars in Whitehorse. In fact, not one dog death. Let's not over-react. The last thing Whitehorse needs is the brown shirts swarming vehicles.

But what is Bylaw doing when something like this occurs? They’re already slow enough when it comes to other matters, so chances are when you call bylaw and they finally get there, the animal will be in distress and almost dead from heat exhaustion.
Here’s a good idea...instead of wasting tax payers money on drones and fancy electronics, quads, sleds and other useless toys, hire a lot more bylaw staff and have those animal bylaw staff start to patrol the parking lots on hot days for the idiots that leave their animals in their vehicles. They need to be proactive on this issue. Not reactive after the animal is already dead inside the vehicle!
