Tai Chi Yukon members will celebrate their first 30 years Saturday with an epic four-hour event.

“We have much to celebrate,” the organization said last week.

“Ever since our founder Cheryl Buchan’s first tai chi class in 1989, hundreds of Yukoners have experienced the health and social benefits of tai chi.

“We have trained many other teachers, hosted visiting instructors and special events, and made links with tai chi groups around the world.

“Instructors have travelled to China and elsewhere to improve their skills.”

Chief instructor Pam Boyde achieved international recognition when she was named a disciple by Grandmaster Yang Jun of the Yang Family Tai Chi organization.

Tai Chi Yukon will be hosting a double celebration on Saturday.

From 10-11 a.m., members will be celebrating World Tai Chi & Qigong Day on the Yukon River side plaza of the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre.

It will be the group’s 15th year of joining people from around the globe who, at 10 a.m. in every time zone, will be gathering to share the healing benefits of Tai Chi Chuan and Qigong.

Participants will then move into the centre’s multi-purpose room from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to honour all the supporters of Tai Chi over the past 30 years.

There will be demonstrations, audience participation activities, draws, and a few surprises.

“We welcome all past and present students as well as newcomers to the art of Tai Chi,” the organization said.

“This event is free, and no tai chi experience is necessary. Drop by at any time to help us celebrate this Chinese art that promotes stress reduction, flexibility, relaxation, increased strength and calmness of mind.”
