Suspect was driving a grey or turquoise sedan

Police are seeking a male suspect after an attempted abduction in downtown Whitehorse Monday evening.

At about 6 p.m., a 13-year-old girl was approached by an unknown man in a car in an alleyway between Third and Fourth avenues, behind the Staples store.

The girl later told Whitehorse RCMP he tried to talk to her and reached out to her from his car.

He then followed her for a “short distance” while still in his car, police said in a news release issued Tuesday afternoon.

The man left the area after the girl pulled out her phone to call for help.

Const. Julia Fox said this morning she could not reveal what the man said to the girl, as the investigation is ongoing.

He is described as an older male with a dark complexion and white beard.

He was reportedly wearing a baggy v-neck shirt with sleeves and loose, tan-coloured baggy pants.

His car is described as a newer grey or turquoise sedan. The make and model are unknown.

“In cases where an assailant is unknown, it is important for the public to know of a potential risk so that they can take whatever steps they are comfortable with to enhance their own safety,” RCMP said in the release.

If women are approached in a similar fashion, Fox recommends they contact police as soon as they’re able to.

“They should take whatever other necessary steps to keep themselves safe,” she said. “Their personal safety is priority #1.”

If possible, descriptions of a suspect’s appearance and vehicle are helpful, she said.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Whitehorse detachment as soon as possible at 667-5551.

My interpretation of what PK is trying to say:

I think PK is honestly just trying to remind people that being a woman is hard. As a woman myself I can honestly say that walking down the street is something I don't like doing without having a pair of headphones in so I can shut the rest of the world out. Being wolf whistled at, being told "you're sexy" or "Nice A**" - it's degrading. I'm a human being who like most other people in this world want to be recognized for who I am as a person not just what I look like on the outside. I'm older than this poor young 13 year old who was grabbed at but I can relate to her; I've had my hand grabbed or held by people who I don't want to touch me. It's uncomfortable and scary when you are unsure what someone is going to do to you and it's worse when they don't let you pull away.

That being said - it's also hard being a man. Men have been given a horrible reputation because of a few losers who feel they can do whatever to whomever. That's not fair to the majority of men who respect women. And there are definitely women out their who don't respect men which is also unfair and not talked about enough.

But arguing over which gender has it worse isn't the point of this article. To me this article is about awareness- making sure you have that conversation with your children (daughters AND sons) about strangers. Making sure they have some type of communication device when they are out so that they can call for help if they need it. It's about letting other parents be aware that there is someone in town who is trying to pick up young girls.

Hey PK..."STFU"...Try being a young female and see how you feel in this situation."
Really? That is your moderated post? Wow...I wish the "moderator" would let me get away with that crap.
Are ewe suggesting PK that the terror level in a youngster about to be allegedly abducted by a alleged predating monster...is more or of higher concern if it is a girl? Sounds like it to me I when I read your emotional based (courts like facts..often) diatribe.
Funny that when I refer to this place now as a sty and I get hammered?
Few unsolved murders, triple (reported) B&E, traffic full of blind distracted morons, apparently girls now only need be vigilant...boys meh, piss tanks aplenty staggering everywhere...with their crackhead minions, I could drone on?

But ewe PK, ...perhaps stop perpetuating the myth that girls are more fragile than boys and stop yelling for folks whom do not agree to "STFU".
I wish for ewe to NOT "STFU" but rather clean up your opposing viewpoints.

PS, this man I mentioned in my previous post said the driver of the vehicle did indeed have a dark complexion, like possibly Hispanic.

I read on my facebook that a reputable person saw the same incident repeat itself in MacIntyre subdivsion on Monday evening at about 5 p.m. A young girl walking briskly away from a new, high end sedan, grey-tan in colour, driven by an older man with white hair and a moustache and possibly a goatee. The man was well groomed. He was following the girl and saying something to her.

He thought it didn't look right but did not want to cause a stir over 'nothing' but once he read this article he contacted the RCMP with what he saw in this other part of town.
Keep your eyes open.

Max Mack - you are the reason women rarely come forward after being victims of a sexual assault. How dare you question a 13 yr old about this and state that if she wasn't physically harmed, there's no basis for her complaint. She was TERRIFIED!

Read/watch more about it and you'll see he actually tried to grab her, then started chasing her on foot. Jumping to conclusions and then victim blaming shows how clueless you are. Try being a young female and see how you feel in this situation. Until that happens, STFU.

There is more to this story for sure. The whole thing stinks.

How do we know this was an "attempted abduction"? As this story is told, there are other plausible explanations that do not involve any criminal or deviant intent.

The red flag here is that she was able to freely walk away from this so-called "assailant", in an area of town that is mostly hidden from public view late at night, without any evidence of having been physically harmed.

And how can the man be an assailant if he did not touch the girl or actually attempt to abduct the girl? Talking to a girl and "approaching" her or "talking to her" or "reaching towards" her are not criminal acts and may point to the actions of a concerned individual as opposed to a sexual predator.

No crime has been committed. So, what are the RCMP investigating exactly?

That entire part of town is a festering hole of disease and addiction.

My kids go to Whitehorse Elementary and they (and I) have witnessed all kinds of crap going on; drunks, drugs, fights, unconscious people, 'public displays of affection', empty liquor bottle, used condoms, ambulances dragging people out of the soup kitchen. It's filthy, take a walk down there any day of the week and see it first hand. The police need to patrol and enforce that golden triangle between the Sally Ann, the Chilkoot Inn and the liquor store.

What does 'dark complexion' mean? White guy with a sun tan? First Nations? Asian, East Indian, African? Can we drop the political correct and get an accurate description? I fail to see why it is so important to dance around the subject. Ridiculous.

This is why there should be license plates on the front and back of the vehicle so they can be identified.

Scary. Now if we could review cctv footage from that general area at that time perhaps the person/car could be identified?

I by no means want to take away from the seriousness of this, but how did she notice all his clothing so well (tan colored baggy pants) if he was in the car but didn't catch the color of the car?

Did he have the car door opened when he reached out to her?
Regardless, this is creepy. Glad she is safe. And it should be all people watching out for themselves--not just females

Behind the staples store...like there is never any danger there?
Too bad our civic leaders are so so soooooo distracted with wealth re-distribution schemes, pandering to special interests to even notice never mind acknowledge the exponential nature in which this place has turned into.

Racism, re-branding, sustainability hogwash, etc., whilst the decay TOOK root.
Don't just lay this crime infested, creep saturated trip on "M" the courts help as does POLITICAL MALFEASANCE...and many of us tolerating this crap.

We as a community need to take it back from predating scumbags.

If the suspect was in his vehicle, how do the police know he was wearing loose tan colored baggy pants? Just curious.
