The man suspected of attacking a teenaged girl in downtown Whitehorse earlier this month is in police custody today.

Christian James Gallan was arrested on Saturday after a member of the public called the RCMP to report seeing the wanted man at a local business.

He was arrested without incident, according to a police press release, and will stay in jail at least until Aug. 26. At that point, a judge will decide whether to release Gallan on bail.

Gallan is charged with sexual assault with a weapon, choking in the commission of an offence and sexual interference of a minor.

He is suspected of attacking a 15-year-old girl as she walked down Strickland Street alone at night.

At the time, police spokesman Sgt. Don Rogers said the girl "was lucky she was able to fight off her attacker."

The girl reported the attack - which occurred two weeks ago on Strickland between Third and Fourth avenues - to police the same night it happened.

When the RCMP reported the incident to the public, they indicated the girl knew her attacker, but did not release the suspect's name until a week later.

Gallan is known to police, according to Rogers.

The accused is not suspected of any other similar crimes, and police believe this was an isolated incident, the sergeant said.

Catching them is only a portion of the battle. Unfortunatly we have so-called judges these days who won't do their job, and let the criminals out again. This shouldn't be catch and release.

Glad to see this perv caught. Now if they were only to sentence him and 'accidentally' incarcerate him in General Population, this re-occuring problem would be solved.
