Students not contracting COVID in schools: MD
There wasn’t much new coming out of this morning’s weekly COVID-19 briefing.
By Tim Giilck on November 17, 2021
There wasn’t much new coming out of this morning’s weekly COVID-19 briefing.
Premier Sandy Silver and André Corriveau, the acting chief medical officer of health, spent more than half an hour putting the best spin on the current virus situation.
Corriveau – who is filling in for Dr. Catherine Elliott for two weeks – said the current numbers show there are 157 active cases in the territory. Six of them are hospitalized, but he offered no further information.
Of the cases recorded since June, 29 per cent are breakthrough infections among fully vaccinated people.
The remainder are amongst partially-vaccinated and unvaccinated people.
The cases amongst the vaccinated people are “milder and shorter” than amongst those who aren’t vaccinated or who only have one shot.
Corriveau noted the booster shots for those over 50 being offered by the government in recent weeks have been extremely popular.
More than 4,000 shots have been delivered so far.
Demographic information shows that 30 per cent of cases “in the last little while” are in the under-12 age groups. That’s a demographic that isn’t approved to receive vaccinations as of yet.
Interestingly, those cases, according to Corriveau, aren’t being contracted at schools, despite the number of cases.
Instead, he suggested, students are acquiring the infections at home and in the community instead, although he offered no details as to how that conclusion was reached.
Despite a rising number of cases in schools, Corriveau said he doesn’t believe there is a compelling reason to close them down as of yet.
He also suggested the interpretation of the evidence at hand suggests there are many undetected and/or untested COVID-19 cases in the territory.
Still, Corriveau believes the current outbreak is beginning to plateau, although Yukoners might still see some increases and around 30 infections a day being recorded.
Silver also addressed the controversy that boiled over Tuesday when it was revealed teachers are eligible for rapid testing (see coverage).
When he was told the Yukon Teachers’ Association was not aware of that, Silver said he was surprised to hear that.
“I wasn’t aware of that lack of understanding on the teachers’ part,” Silver said.
He said he would look into the situation further and see what could be done.
Corriveau, in response to a reporter’s question, said the situation with rapid testing is still being studied, and more information will soon follow.
Neither man had an answer for another reporter’s question dealing with a significant discrepancy in the numbers of active cases between the Yukon and federal government sites.
A reader provided the Star with the figures – which were verified – showing the Yukon has 224 active cases by federal information sources, while the Yukon government had recorded just 164 active cases.
Silver said he will look into that discrepancy.
See letters.

Still the refusal to acknowledge the ages and co-morbidities of the deaths attributed to Covid.
Why the emphasis on "partially vaccinated" since we've been told the first shot gives 90+ percent immunity within two weeks? Surely they're not trying to promote these vaccines?
And the emphasis on weaker disease among the vaccinated - should certainly hope so. Otherwise there is no argument rather than just a weak argument in favour of vaccination. Surely the issue is that a whopping one third of infections are among the fully vaccinated.
They need also to support the claim that 30 percent of recent infections are among under 12s. There is a significant body of evidence to suggest that children are not carriers of this disease - they do not suffer from it, and they do not spread it.
The entire data release is subject to manipulation for political objectives and those responsible undermine the credibility of themselves and vaccination as a method of disease control. It's powerfully reckless. You cannot behave like this and retain the credibility of the public health system.

This happened at my work.
A parent fully vaccinated but whose kid (5-11yrs) was diagnosed positive showed up to work because he didn't have any symptoms.
Wasn't he spreading virus to coworkers?

"...Corriveau believes the current outbreak is beginning to plateau,..."
I suspect this speculative comment was intended to demonstrate things aren't as bad as they appear, and Yukoners can expect the infection numbers to trend down - sometime. The thing is, government has no other method to demonstrate their directions are resulting in positive outcomes, so the big infected and dead scoreboard becomes the public's primary method to measure their governments' performance as new restrictions are put into place.
So if it is the 'science' that is the basis for all the government's decisions, show your work and how these opinion are arrived at.
Watch the political commentary in Europe and elsewhere as the public is now rioting against these decrees from their governments that change day by day.
Their job is no longer to erradicate the COVID virus, but to manage public angst and reactions for the work these authorities have already performed...with poor results. Yes things are getting worse in a kinder, gentler reassuring way. I'm wondering if YG has created a strategy for how they will deal with Yukoners when the protests here begin in earnest?
It's a cluster of ducks.

Because of being a Yukon senior I was among the first double vaxed people in Canada. I did my best to support local in this so called pandemic as businesses were getting beat up. On this latest emergency enforcement I have rescinded that commitment and I can no longer participate in this ridiculous charade. My sincere apologies to the business community.

DMZ, I didn't catch that part about the hair. Long shaggy hair might be noticeable in Ireland but hardly here lol. Cases there continue to rise, and I expect further restrictions soon. Last year they got caught, with opening up for Christmas just in time for the Delta variant to hit, and I doubt the health folks will forget that. We'll see, I guess.

They'll change their story by next week. Just wait. And they call this 'science', while they make things up as they go along.
The really atrocious part is that they're ripping off our constitutional rights and driving us into poverty and disease with these endless measures and mandates.

Teresa Tam is telling Canadians that schools and students are the source of the outbreaks. It must be purely coincidence that Health Canada just issued emergency use approval for kids. Now let's prepare to watch the local faction do an about face on this week's dogma to push the vaccine on children next week. Old dogs, old tricks.

Hi
Can any "reporter" ask Chief Medical Officer of Health why he would not confirm whether or not the person was vaccinated, because it is considered private health information, but I have to show evidence of vaccination and my ID in each restaurant/bar/barber etc...
This is not considered private health information. I would like to know what he will say...

@similarities with Ireland, thanks for the link, it is interesting. Also of interest is the podcast that accompanies the article, which includes an interview with an editor at the Independent.
He was talking about the restrictions the government in Ireland has put in, and says that so far they've shied away from overly discriminatory restrictions. In Ireland you need to show vaccine papers for cinemas, pubs, and restaurants. You don't need them for gyms, or hairdressers or barbers. The journalist points out that these are things people need to get by in society. He also says that, if you can't get your hair cut if you're not vaccinated, are we going to have a situation where you can spot the unvaccinated people by their long hair? As an example of how divisive it could get.

Everything I have read and heard about the covid vax is similar to the flu vaccine It does not guarantee immunity but seems to help when you actually get covid it doesn't hit you as hard. There is no research anywhere that unvaccinated folks are a threat to people that have been vaccinated just the opposite so why the concern about unvaccinated people?

That's funny! The powers that be can't possibly know this. Besides which, if 8 kids in the same class test positive for covid, but kids usually only show signs of a cold, take it home to parents, siblings, I'd say the kids got it in the classroom.
But then, I'm one of the paeans, so gullible I believe every thing the government tells me, because them dudes went to school and in their eyes, if you aren't working for government, you're too stupid to be responsible for yourself, or call it bull**** when you see bull****. Although, I am happy to see resistance to this dictatorship/alliance is growing.

Really? Then explain why the elementary schools are so chock full of COVID infections. This government is not doing their job.

If you're interested, here's one of the best explanations I've seen about cases, boosters, immunity, including how 'our first winter with Delta' is causing so many infections https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/health/explainer-how-we-got-here-why-booster-jabs-are-critical-and-why-cases-are-so-high-among-vaccinated-people-41061811.html

As recently as September 9th, YG and the various cmoh and acmoh have been very clear that all COVID deaths have been in unvaccinated people, yet when the acmoh was asked in the conference today if the most recent deceased was vaccinated or unvaccinated, they suddenly dodged the question saying that they couldn’t divulge that due to privacy concerns. What about the privacy concerns of the other deceased. Makes you wonder.
Also, what about the privacy concerns of everybody else that they’re asking to go about scanning bar codes like some Orwellian dystopia.

@Jeff
Exactly. Why would any reasonable person trust the governments parsing of the data? Very simple to release simple anonymized data sets of cases, hospitalizations and deaths according to whether they were unvaccinated, partially vaccinated or double vaccinated plus 14 days. There is no legitimate reason to hide this data. None. I would wager the outcomes for the completely unvaccinated are looking better all the time and that a significant percentage of the deaths were partially/fully vaxxed. They don’t post the data because it does not support their narrative.

I call total BS. Just look at EWES with multiple kids in multiple classes testing positive. My kids class alone has received multiple notices.

"Of the cases recorded since June, 29 per cent are breakthrough infections among fully vaccinated people."
That is an odd start date.
Tell us about the last month. Tell us about the rapid escalation of recent cases that justify the state of emergency. Please help us to understand. Lists, graphs, and charts please.

State of emergency with no transparency. 37% discrepancy between feds and YG. Failed vaccine. This is fine.

I feel like this government has rolled out the Jedi mind trick a little too thickly here. 'Covid isn't spreading in the schools.'
NO ONE who has ever been a parent (or a teacher for that matter) buys that BS.

Great, another doctor that cares so much has taken a 2 week holiday right after these extremem measures.. just like Hanley did. Really goes to show you their true character, calls state-of-emergency then leaves!
