Stepfather ‘ treated both girls as prostitutes,' court is told
A stepfather who sexually abused his two daughters will spend 4 1/2 years in prison, half the time he spent assaulting his children.
A stepfather who sexually abused his two daughters will spend 4 1/2 years in prison, half the time he spent assaulting his children.
The 32-year-old man can only be named as JR due to a publication ban meant to protect his young victims.
He began abusing the older of the two girls when she was just six years old, Crown prosecutor Bonnie Macdonald said during a sentencing hearing Wednesday.
The abuse began with touching and oral sex, then escalated to intercourse when the girl was 13.
Macdonald told the court the man threatened to start having sexual relations with the younger sister if the elder one did not give in to him.
Eventually, he began having sex with the younger sister as well; she was nine at the time.
He "essentially treated both girls as prostitutes,” Macdonald said, giving them money and treats in return for sex.
He would also get them drunk or high so he could take advantage of them.
To stop them from telling anyone of the abuse, he played mind games on the older sister, Macdonald said.
He put the burden of stopping the abuse on the girls, telling them they could get help at any time. At the same time, he told them they would be put in foster care if they ever told on him.
The man eventually separated from the girls' mother and gained sole custody of them with the mother's consent.
This gave him "unlimited access” to the girls, Macdonald said, and he moved the family constantly to avoid getting caught.
Through the years, the older sister continued to bear the bulk of her stepfather's attentions, as he forced himself on her weekly, the court heard.
The relationship between him and the older sister became much like a dysfunctional marriage, Macdonald said. The man called his stepdaughter a "gold-digger” and other names usually reserved for grown women in consenting relationships.
The daughter tried to find her stepfather a girlfriend in the hopes he would stop preying on the sisters, Macdonald said, but he told her he only liked young girls.
She even went as far as to consider fixing him up with her friends, the court heard.
The older girl began running away only to be brought back by police. That result further frightened the girl and later, when police discovered what was happening, "sickened” the officers involved.
The man turned himself in 10 months ago, after the older sister ran away.
Her escape was prompted by the man's pressure to "experiment with new positions” and his suggestion they watch pornography together to "learn more about sex,” Macdonald said.
The girl's greatest fears were realized when, after the man was arrested, both she and her sister were briefly put in foster care.
After nine years, the abuse finally stopped when the man was arrested.
He entered a full confession, "saving the state ... a more extensive investigation,” his lawyer said, and saving the girls from having to testify or write victim impact statements.
Both the Crown and defence agreed on a six-year sentence, which Judge John Faulkner approved Wednesday.
JR was credited for the 10 months he has already spent in jail, leaving him to serve five years and two months.
If the man takes sex offender counselling and behaves well in prison, he will likely be released within 40 months.
After his release, JR will be under the court's supervision for 20 years.
He will be banned from working with children or attending any places were children may be unsupervised for the rest of his life.

Oh my gosh, this is the most disturbing news Ive ever read...I know what those poor girls are going through, it happened to me and my sister, when we were young. I just hope and pray that they get the help they need.
To the young girls, keep being brave, stand strong, It's not your fault. I pray all the help that is out there be by your side...May the Lord be with you, bless you in everything you do, and to give you courage and strength, to face all your hurts and pain. I don't know you but I love you, for your strength and courage.

This prep will get his just reward be assured that. Either in jail by other inmates or if you are a Christian God will net his justice onto him. I personally would like to see a much more severe punishment.
This low life likely was severely abused as a child while this is not justification to do the same to others it is where he learned that it was ok to do. He should be casterated and medicated to remove all sexual desire.
As a nation we need to make sexual preditors known to all where ever they may live. They should not be allowed to live freely in the public for fear of repeating offences. There should be no statue of limitations on child rape and the younger the victim the more severe the punishment. The same should also be made toward any kind of child abuse.
As a community we need to stand up and demand a better justice system. We need to demand that jail be a punishment not a hotel where the criminal is cuddled.
That is a crime in itself. Shame on our justice system.

It appears the girls were 'sentenced' to a term of pain and abuse much longer than their abuser. How horribly sad that he is given only a token sentence. He should be exiled to a place where he won't abuse children again, and I do mean for the rest of his life.
I hope the girls are receiving the help and support that they need for now,and for as long as it is needed.

Four and a half years for raping children for nine years straight??!!
What the bloody H?!
Does no one take child rape seriously? This is unreal. Absolutely unreal.
Crown Prosecutor Bonnie MacDonald should be incredibly ashamed of herself for REQUESTING this ridiculously inadequate sentence. How Judge Faulkner allowed this joint submission to become the sentence is beyond me, he's usually not a patsy for rapists, especially child molesters I would think.
I doubt this could even be open to an appeal from the crown since this is what the crown asked for. The girls themselves who had the courage to pursue the monster who abused them were not taken at all seriously by our justice system. Why would they approach the situation a second time with an appeal.
So, Chester Molester, who cannot be named, gets off way too easy.
A sad day.

I cried as I read this story. I pray that peace comes to these girls. They deserve hugs, kindness and encouragement which is what they should have been given by someone who was supposed to protect them.

This is horrific! Whoever is capable of such things cannot be made better. They are damaged people who, in my opinion, deserve a lot worse than life in prison (let alone 4 1/2 years). It's funny how someone can scam people out of money and receive multiple life sentences, but rape two innocent, vulnerable children and you get a little more than a slap on the wrist. Sadly, it shows us what we as a society value in this day and age.
What makes people even think that this kind of a sentence is OK?! Those girls are going to have to live with what he has done for the rest of their lives, and worse, they're going to have to worry about seeing him out on the street again in as little as 40 months. Our justice system is so backwards and twisted, it makes me sick. I hope those girls get the help they need so that they can go on to lead healthy lives. People like "JR" have done their damage and cannot make up for it by attending sex offender counselling and behaving well in prison. He should do every minute of his short sentence and be kept away from the public for the rest of his unfortunate life.

"These poor girls will never be the same", but perhaps they can have their dignity restored. No one deserves to be abused, and that especially means children. I hope there is PROPER treatment for these children to help them integrate themselves into life without what they were going through. It has to be like they are now living with post traumatic shock.
If that "man" had any assets, they should rightfully go to helping these girls through these upcoming years.

This is disgusting and wrong on all levels! Those poor girls have suffered tremendously and I hope they can now begin to heal while he is locked away where he belongs.
I can't believe any mother would give up sole custody of their children to a man like that. Shame on their mother for not protecting them, shame on the stepfather for being such a dispicable person.
My heart goes out to these brave girls.

This S.O.B should have been put away for ever. He does not deserve to ever be free to do this again to some other innocent children.
