Anyone who was hoping to travel from Carcross to Skagway today and vice-versa may want to think twice about it.
Anyone who was hoping to travel from Carcross to Skagway today and vice-versa may want to think twice about it.
A portion of the South Klondike Highway that was closed at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday was reopened at 10:50 a.m. today.
However, officials with the Department of Highways and Public Works are advising motorists to be cautious and double-check the road report at http://www.511yukon.ca/en/ before they head out.
“There is still a risk,” spokeswoman Kendra Black said late this morning.
Officials will continue to monitor conditions, she added, and could opt to close part of the road again if necessary.
The road was closed from kilometre 24 to kilometre 106 (Carcross to Fraser, B.C.) due to avalanche risk.
Black said a couple of small snowslides occurred Tuesday in the area.
From kilometre 58 to kilometre 70, the road continues to be listed as having an “avalanche area.” It’s also listed as having icy sections.
Other sections of roads throughout the territory have also closed due to conditions.
They include the Top Of The World Highway from Dawson City to the Alaska border at kilometre 106 and the Dempster Highway from kilometre 394 past Eagle Plains to the Northwest Territories border at kilometre 465.
The Canol Road is also closed for the season.
Other roads throughout the territory are listed as being covered or partly covered with snow except for one section of the North Klondike Highway which is bare from kilometre 224 at Deep Creek to kilometre 256 at Carmacks.
