A rockslide on the South Klondike Highway between Carcross and Fraser, B.C., closed both lanes this morning.
At about 8 a.m., rocks tumbled onto the road at kilometre 58.
At press time, the area was still unstable, with rocks still shifting due to the heavy rain, so crews on site hadn’t been able to start cleaning up the highway.
Alicia Debreceni, spokeswoman for the Department of Highways and Public Works, said that, to her knowledge, no one was injured and no vehicles were damaged.
Rockslides are common in the area during rainstorms, she said.
Debreceni said she was unable to say this morning when the crews will be able to start cleaning the highway.
Today is U.S. Independence Day, and in Skagway, celebrations including a parade and weekend softball tournament are scheduled.
Melanie Brais, president of the Whitehorse Co-Ed Slo-Pitch League, said some teams left Thursday night for Skagway, while others planned to leave today.
As well, the Yukon RCMP sent a delegation of officers to Skagway for the parade. Most arrived Thursday night. Only a few, who were scheduled to leave this morning, will miss the parade due to the road closure.
Doug Lundquist, a meteorologist for the Yukon with Environment Canada, said the southern Yukon can expect a “fairly high amount” of rain, from about 50 to 70 millimetres, over the next two days.
“Thunderstorms in Alberta developed and wrapped through in the Northwest Territories, and rain from that whole system is crossing the Yukon and then heading back out over the coast, towards Skagway,” he said.
“It looks like, from our computer models and from what we’re seeing, the heaviest rain would be south of Whitehorse, down through Carmacks, Tagish, and out through Skagway.”
