A ski guide was killed Tuesday in an avalanche near Haines, Alaska.

Robert Liberman, a 35-year-old guide with Alaska Heliskiing, was leading a group of six people on a helicopter skiing trip at around 11 a.m. on Takhini Ridge, south of Mile 33 of the Haines Highway, when the slide happened.

Megan Peters, a spokesperson for the Alaska State Troopers, said a second group of skiiers heliskiing in the area stopped to help with rescue efforts.

Liberman, from Telluride, Col., was one of two people buried. He died on the scene.

Another member of the group survived after being pulled from the snow, and was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

The injured person has been identified as 26-year-old Nick Dodov of Truckee, Calif. His condition is listed as "critical,” Peters said this morning.

Everyone in the group wore avalanche beacons, she added.

According to local media, that location on the highway is a popular loading zone for skiers boarding helicopters bound for the backcountry.

On a profile posted on the Alaska Heliskiing website, Liberman describes himself as a former University of Colorado ski racer who has loved skiing since childhood.

"Alaska has always been the mecca and after my first pilgrimage in 2005,” he wrote, "I have been returning more appreciative and humbled each year.”

Five people died in Alaska avalanches during the 2010-2011 winter and spring season, according to the Alaska Avalanche Information Center.

Beats being hit by a bus, out doing the things he loved.

Reminds me of local import Honza (don't recall last name) a young Czech that was killed a couple years ago in an avalanche.

Nothing is risk free, you just learn to minimize and accept it for the rewards you receive.
