Slow-acting poison suspected in dog’s illness

Whitehorse RCMP are investigating a suspected dog poisoning in Porter Creek – the fourth in recent months.
A family in the neighbourhood reported on Tuesday that their dog, a 60-pound mixed breed, had been healthy Monday night.
By the next morning, it wasn’t able to walk properly.
They brought the dog to a veterinarian, who believed it may have ingested a slow-acting poison sometime in the previous few days or even weeks.
The dog received a blood transfusion and is now recovering at home.
“While the family resides around Ninth Avenue in the Porter Creek area, they do walk their dog down trails along the greenbelt, and do attend a lake nearby,” Whitehorse RCMP said Wednesday.
“It is unknown at this time when or where the poison was ingested, or what type of poison it was.”
In March, two corgis on Tamarack Drive fell ill suddenly and died. Their tissue tested positive for strychnine.
Later that month, a German shepherd-husky cross on the same street became sick, but a veterinarian was able to pump his stomach and he survived.
An analysis of the dog’s stomach contents also showed the presence of strychnine, as well as raw hamburger meat.
There were also small piles of raw meat found on lawns in Porter Creek, but after testing, those were found not to be contaminated.
Strychnine is a strong poison, commonly used to kill rats. Symptoms usually appear within 15 to 60 minutes of ingestion.
RCMP continue to investigate all of these cases. Anyone with information is asked to contact them at 667-5555.
Kona’s Coalition is offering a reward for any information that leads to an arrest. The organization can be reached at 334-4224, by email at konascoalition@gmail.com or through its Facebook page.

Someone knows who is doing this. Someone has seen a person tossing or throwing something as they drive by, or perhaps in their mind..they know of someone who might do something like this.
Keeping silent because "you don't want to get involved, it wasn't your pet" is as good as doing it yourself. Someone knows something..they always do.
