With Mount Sima's season winding down, skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts will be looking to make the most out of the hill's facility this long weekend.

Easter Monday will mark the official end of the hill's ski season, though its area manager said Mount Sima will still see plenty of use in the coming months.

Guillaume Rochet said the events scheduled include a snowmobile hill climb on April 19, weddings booked until the end of July, and a mountain bike festival set for August.

The additional revenue will be welcomed with open arms, especially considering the hill was closed, due to cold weather, for most of the Christmas break.

Rochet said Mount Sima was only opened for four days out of what is normally 17 during the Christmas period. He added the hill lost about $50,000 because of the closure.

"When you miss Christmas, you miss a lot of money for the season," he said.

As well, because of financial and technical problems that essentially wiped out the 2007-08 ski season, that season's passes were honoured this year, thus reducing revenue potential.

Rochet said the hill will have some help from Lotteries Yukon and possibly the Community Development Fund to make up for the lost revenue.

"For sure, next winter will be better," he said. "It was not too bad this winter, but it will just be better."

Despite the season's late start, Rochet is pleased with how it's ending.

"It is so nice to finish with strong things," he said. "We saw a lot of big smiles on the faces of skiers, so I am sure they will be back for next winter."

This year, Sima had 250 season's pass holders and, as of Wednesday, around 13,000 visits.

Rochet isn't quite sure how much money the hill made this year, but whatever the number ends up being, it will exceed the previous season's.

Rochet said the top priority at the moment is keeping the hill's mechanical system in good condition to minimize the chances of problems for next winter.

Despite there still being plenty of snow on the ground, Rochet said this is a normal time for a ski hill to close in Canada. With the temperature warming up, he added, some of the hill's runs might be unusable this week.

Mount Sima is open today through Monday. Its operating times on Saturday, Sunday and Monday will be extended, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
