A man was killed in Whitehorse on Saturday morning and police have charged a 16-year-old girl in connection to the death.

Whitehorse RCMP were called to a house on the 200 block of Rainbow Road in Crestview at approximately 2:30 Saturday morning.

There, they found a 56-year-old man in critical condition. He was taken to Whitehorse General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police are not releasing the man's name to the public nor are they saying how he was killed.

Another Rainbow Road resident said he saw police cars and emergency vehicles in the neighbourhood at about 3 a.m. They had their lights flashing, but their sirens were silent, he said.

The man, who asked to remain anonymous, said he was watching television when something happening on the street first caught his attention.

"At about 2:30 (a.m.), I hear a vehicle go by, but really slow," the neighbour said.

He went to the window and a saw an older model green truck cruising down the street with no lights on. The neighbour thought nothing of it and went back to the TV.

Half an hour later, he saw several police cruisers move up and down the street "like they were looking for something." They were joined by at least one ambulance, according to the neighbour.

Police blocked off access to the street and were on the scene for the rest of the day.

Later in that same morning, a 16-year-old girl turned herself in to police.

She has been charged with second-degree murder and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday. Her name cannot be published because she is a minor.

According to an RCMP press release issued this morning, the dead man and the girl lived together.

"They never talked to anybody," the neighbour said of the family that lives in the house.

"The kids would walk their dogs sometimes and say 'hello,' but that was it."

He said he believes a mother and her two teenaged children, one boy and one girl, have lived there for the last eight or nine years.

Rumours in Crestview are that the man was shot, but the Star has not spoken to anyone who heard gun shots.

The police are not releasing any details on what weapon, if any, was used in the incident.

Hey all. She was charged with murder. Seems that the police probably had a reason for that, especially given her age. I do not believe they'd have thrown the book at her like that for no reason. Also, the story says that a car was seen cruising the street with no lights on before the incident. Sounds like it may have been a premeditated attack. Still, if the victim and girl knew each other, who knows what was going on. Maybe we'll never know, given her age and the ability of the courts to close the case to the public.

I agree with Michelle Redfearn, fireweed, and Makes me wonder. You do not know all the circumstances that brought the 16-year-old to do what she did. Who are you to to judge and convict? Unless you are part of the Investigating team or part of the family to know what happened, we don't need narrow-minded people drawing conclusions that have no basis.

I don't know the victim or the accused but the first thing I tought was I wonder why a 16 year old girl would murder a 56 year old man at the wee hours of the morning- What was he trying to do to her?? That she had to act so violently?

Before you judge Arn, maybe you should consider the circumstances of what might have been happening in that house that would bring a 16 year old to kill? The whole story isn't here so get off your soap box about the justice system failing at rehabilitating the child and think about the ENTIRE situation!! It hasn't even gotten to court and you have deamed her guilty AND given her a sentance!

You are unbeleiveable - do you have any inside knowledge about this girl that hasn't been printed - you have no idea what the extenuating circumstances are - what if it was self-defence?

Wow, can anybody say 'gets off on a techanlity' or '1 year house arrest'.

I mean she could go to that new womens treatment building and be correctly rehabiliatied (snicker, snicker). With all the money thats being spent on revolving door criminals (new jails) who are we to question if they are ready to strike fear into society once they are let loose. Thank you RCMP for doing all the preliminary work while our wonderfull court system throws it all out the door for cheap sympathy convictions and bad plea bargaining by the crown who's main purpose is too let these clowns control society.
