Six new fires push season total to 99

More lightning and dry conditions in the territory resulted in six new wildfires over the weekend

More lightning and dry conditions in the territory resulted in six new wildfires over the weekend, bringing the total for the season to 99.

The fires were discovered throughout the territory, including Watson Lake, Dawson City, Old Crow, Mayo and Carmacks.

"While we have identified values near some of the fires, none are at immediate risk,” duty officer Lorne Harris of Yukon Wildland Fire Management said today.

"We will be patrolling those fires later today; however, a downturn in the weather will help limit the fire behaviour and growth.”

The first blaze discovered over the weekend was in the Carmacks district near Talmark Ridge, about 35 kilometres northeast of Pelly. A cabin stands about three kilometres from the two-hectare fire but is not at immediate risk.

In the Mayo district, two new fires were discovered. The most significant is located 125 kilometres northeast of Mayo near the Nadaleen River, as a mining camp is approximately 15 kilometres away.

The remaining fires are located in the wilderness zone with no identified values in the area.

Meanwhile, the fires burning in the Watson Lake district that forced last Thursday's temporary closure of the Robert Campbell Highway are still burning but have shown little growth.

Cooler temperatures are expected to keep fire behaviour low, and no further closures are expected.

The public is reminded to exercise caution with burning and to be aware of any suspicious smoke.

Burning permits are now mandatory, and will be suspended if the fire danger rating is moderate, high or extreme.

The public should be aware that due to mounting fire activity in Alberta, B.C., and the N.W.T., there may be low-lying smoke in some parts of the territory.
