Sima survey results not being publicly revealed

Alpine skiers and snowboarders may have to keep wondering if Mt. Sima will open this winter.

Alpine skiers and snowboarders may have to keep wondering if Mt. Sima will open this winter.

Mt. Sima officials are remaining quiet about the results of a survey which closed Sunday and which will be a factor in deciding whether the hill will reopen for the coming winter season.

The recreational facility closed in July amid significant financial problems that became evident in the spring.

The hill had offered an adventure park for the past two summers before the current hill operators – the Great Northern Ski Society (GNSS) – closed the facility two months ago.

That was in addtion to the ski/snowboard offerings during the winter months over the last nearly 20 years.

The current GNSS board has focused on paying off debts with the possibility of dissolving the board.

As well, others have worked to get the hill in operation for the winter.

Their measures include a survey launched last month aimed at getting pledges from those committed to buying a season's pass at a reduced rate should the hill reopen.

This morning, officials would not say how many people had committed to buying a pass or providing donations to help keep the hill reopened.

Current board secretary Lee Vincent explained that while the current board is continuing its efforts to pay off outstanding debts, the issue of the survey and a possible reopening is in the hands of the new group.

Tyler Nichol is among those working to get Mt. Sima reopened.

Contacted this morning, he would not provide the numbers and wouldn't comment on the survey and what it means for the coming season.

He noted he would have to speak with others involved before he talked to media on the matter. Nichol also said he understands they wouldn't be revealing the numbers from the survey just yet.

Nichol said he would get back to the Star, but did not provide any details as of press time this afternoon.

There were also no updates provided on the Mt. Sima website, its public Facebook page or its Twitter page.

The last time the Twitter page was updated was July 8, inviting residents to a public session on the hill's future.

Meanwhile, both the Facebook page and website (www.mountsima.com) were last updated on Aug. 26 and 27.

Each asked people to make pledges to buy a pass, provide a donation or become a sponsor.

@June Jackson

I agree that there is a lot of closed-door maneuvering going on.

There are some high-profile names that are being protected in this whole mess.

I wonder if directors of "lowly" non-profits would be subject to similar government largesse. Not likely. Look at how the former board of Mae Bachur were treated.

"The current GNSS board has focused on paying off debts with the possibility of dissolving the board." When did it become a 'possibility'. Not long ago GNSS announced that it was in the process of dissolving.. money came and all of a sudden its a 'possibility'.

Frankly, I believe all this crap is a smokescreen, that the City and the Gov are going to keep pouring money into GNSS and the taxpayer will be screwed into perpetuity. Not that we're not screwed anyway between this council and the sitting Territorial government. I just think there is more going on behind closed doors than we are being told about.. that Curtis, Paslawski, Hougen are thicker than thieves and agreements may already have been struck..

Also, some 3rd party had better be verifing the results of the monkey survey or I'm not going to believe a word of it..

I also have a concern about how legal it is to either raise money, or ask for financial committments when there is no legal venue to do so..if GNSS is dissolving? (who really knows?) is it legal for them? What legal position does Tyler Nichol have to raise money for a 3rd party (Sima) venue? My Uncle is a Prince of Arabia but his money is locked up, I just need someone with a bank account in your country and I will split the 500 million dollars 50/50, please send information to........point? with out legal standing.. does this request fall into a scam category?

this article uses "wouldn't" where "couldn't before press time" might have been more appropriate

as I see it, a very newly formed volunteer group is trying to pull things together, and trying not to set unrealistic hopes or expectations.

I'm sure that some data will be forthcoming before too long.

So now its a possibility they might dissolve the GNSS. I thought they were going to get their money and want to go another year running it into the ground and then want more money next year LOL. Keep it closed.
