MEETING YUKONERS – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addresses a large crowd at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre in Whitehorse on the evening of Sept. 1, 2017. He will visit Dawson City, but not Whitehorse, on Canada Day.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will opt out of celebrating Canada Day in the nation’s capital this year, instead dropping by three Canadian communities – one here in the Yukon.
First up on his schedule will be Leamington, Ont., followed by Regina and finally Dawson City.
In a brief statement to the Star, a spokesperson said he would be celebrating the day “with Canadians and their families in different communities.”
Meanwhile, Premier Sandy Silver said he is excited to host Trudeau.
“It is a wonderful time to celebrate in the Klondike,” he said of his riding.
“We are looking forward to showing him our beautiful community of Dawson City.”
The Dawson City Museum will host a small parade late in the morning which is often followed by speeches and a community barbecue.
The museum’s executive director said the day usually wraps up at around 4 p.m., but he had not heard of anything from the Prime Minister’s Office as of late Monday.
The spokesperson verified that Trudeau will touch down in Dawson closer to the early evening for a community event, but was unable to provide more details.
Trudeau was last in the territory in early September 2017 – his first foray as prime minister. He held a Friday evening meet-and-greet at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre. A large crowd turned out, including Mayor Dan Curtis, Silver and several cabinet ministers.
The following Saturday morning, Trudeau and Silver held a news conference at Miles Canyon.
There, they announced their two governments would spend more than $360 million to improve road access to mineral-rich areas in the territory. The federal share amounts to $247 million of that total.
The two leaders said the money will upgrade more than 650 kilometres of road and build or upgrade a number of bridges for highways leading into the Dawson Range in Central Yukon and the Nahanni Range in the southeast part of the territory.
Trudeau also visited Whitehorse several months after becoming Liberal leader in April 2013.
His pending visit might carry an undertone of some of the international conflicts the country is seeing, particularity with its southern neighbour after the Untied States imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
In Regina, for instance, he will meet with steelworkers after touching base with factory workers in Leamington who produce the paste used in French’s ketchup.
That product, along with strawberry jam, whiskey and yogurt, is just one of the imports that the U.S. will be taxed with in retaliatory tariffs. They are expected to take effect on no other date than July 1.

Sandy is doing fine although it seems a little odd to support the placer industry with carbon tax rebates and let the snowflakes (including me of course) pay the tax.
Justin is running up a deficit which I hope can be stopped in the near future. Cannot get my head around the gov buying and building pipelines. Justin is far better than the previous leader for sure.
Welcome Justin and have a nice time in Dawson.

Some people on here seem to have short memories as the mocking, hateful barrage of vitriol directed non stop at Ryan Leef, Darrell Pasloski and Stephen Harper on this comment board makes these comments seem tame in comparison. I guess when it’s a liberal suddenly the rules change and everyone’s supposed to play nice eh?

The Yukon economy has nothing to politicians because the Federal liberals is pushing Canada into strong possibility of a recession we have not seen in years.
Yukon mining is up because of world demand but the US actions will kill that too.
Trudeau does have it as Prime Minister.
Attacking Sandy Silver personally is wrong and those doing it are just not connected to reality.
Sandy and I come from the same area and he comes from a great family.
I do not agree with some of his actions, decisions and planning.
But he does listen - things like sale tax and going deep into debt are two examples.

Crapping on people from being away is low brow. They are Canadians and can live anywhere and have any job they like anywhere in Canada. Criticize their politics all you like but recall that our last two premiers were not born here either. Man, the whining on the comment section reminds me of finger nails on a chalkboard. Get a life folks. Get out there and make a difference like that those that you are putting down are trying to do. Life is short so take a deep breath and stop hating on others.

" And the cryers gonna cry, cry, cry, cry,"
It boils down to as simple as this. If Trudeau gets the pipeline in, he's a smash hit and the Libs get re-elected to continue with a record far better than any con government has turned in, considering recent memory.
No pipeline and he's kicking horse pucs down the road with a freed up future. As for those machos questioning his manhood all the time, I remind you what he taught the much larger Con senator about bullying.

Is there anyway that these comments can be mailed to our Premier? Do you think he reads the comments after the article? Are these comments indicative of the way a majority of Yukoners feel about the Prime Minister?
I personally think they are the way a majority of Yukoners, a real majority in this case - 50% + 1 - and not the political definition of a majority, feel about Justin Trudeau.
If that is the case, Sandy Silver has an opportunity, and perhaps a duty, to present them to the Prime Minister.

Not to excited, more selfie and self praising, more here's my socks, more band standing, just stay back and spend more of our Tax money unwisely, give more to other countries for them to spend unwisely, take in more illegals and kick out more homeless in shelters to make room, maybe save some of the money your spending flaunting yourself and your corrupt government( 5 times found guilty on ethics charges) and spend some of it on our poor Veteran's that you said you have no more for......

So, a Nova Scotian teacher that defaulted into the Yukon premiers job is going to be touring a Quebec PM around Dawson. It sounds like a bad joke, all we need is a priest or a rabbi to round out the story.

I was never a fan of Prime Minister Harper, but he made a dozen or more visits to the Yukon while he was in office. It never occurred to me to mock him or say nasty things about him online.

Yeah....a post card would have sufficed. The optics of jetting around on the taxpayers dime are becoming increasingly repugnant.
I'm amazed that these "leaders" come in with real power and a real opportunity to do real long term good....if only it wasn't all about money, power and prestige.
Sadly with the majority of bipeds, there is no wisdom by and large so even if a good leader gets in, the idiocracy of the majority ensures a status quo of consumption, distraction, governmental waste......more of the same.
Stay home JT....don't you have work to do instead of an image to polish?

I am sure he is checking out the big spaces that he wants us to fill with illegal immigrants. Tent Cities, empty buildings, Salvation Army beds, Senior Housing, Social Housing. I am sure he will not ask about our already homeless residents. He only seems to care about the illegals poring over our borders who already had visas to live in the USA - but we give better free benefits than the USA - healthcare, dental, housing, clothing and social assistance as soon as they come over the border illegally. We do not do that for our own people.

LOL: Why would you think I live in "tax-payer assisted" housing? Because I often wonder about other posters here, I'll share this much of my history. I do not live in government housing, I am an immigrant. I have a trade and have worked and paid taxes for 55 years. I do not receive any government assistance; no GIS. I go out to work every day. I have never collected 1 penny of SA and although I have applied for UI, I always had a job before I could collect it. I earned my CPP and OAS, and senior benefits, though I have to pay for most medications as the Meds the specialists are prescribing these days are not on the Yukon formulary. My question to you? Why do you make assumptions about people?

He sure loves racking up the milage on that jet he has. I suggest that he also pay for all the carbon that thing belches out while ferrying him around the planet for all his selfy-important meetings. As it stands today he pays virtually nothing as transportation is something covered in his office package, meaning tax payers pay for everything. He makes $350K per year and never reaches into his own pocket to pay for anything. Once a trust fund kid, it's hard to behave like the rest of we citizens. Affording the Carbon Tax? No Sweat off his brow.

It is not an honour to have the worst PM in Canadian history here, who just picked up a 5th guilty charge from the Ethic's Commissioner.. bribery..taking freebies and not telling anyone about it.. plus there is the carbon tax rhetoric.. BS for money grab while Trudeau jets around all over the world just leaving his little ol' carbon footprint everywhere while asking taxpayers to foot the bill for his good time.. has the hypocrite ever tried staying home?
