Significant shuffles are concern to YP critic

By Whitehorse Star on January 12, 2023

Brad Cathers, the Yukon Party’s critic for the Departments of Finance and Health and Social Services, has some concerns about the major shuffles in the public service Sandy Silver has announced in his waning days as premier.

“We thank the outgoing deputy minister of Finance, Scott Thompson, and outgoing deputy minister of Executive Council Office Stephen Mills for their years of service to the public,” Cathers said.

“My Yukon Party caucus colleagues and I wish them both well in retirement.

“However, these changes raise serious questions about the relationship between the bureaucracy and the new Liberal leader (Ranj Pillai).

“The announcement of the unexpected departure of the two senior deputy ministers who work directly with the premier in just one week raises questions about the incoming premier’s reputation with civil servants and may indicate a lack of confidence by senior officials in Mr. Pillai,” Cathers said.

“In addition, shuffling the deputy minister of Health (Michael Hale) so soon after his appointment to that role raises concern about the ongoing frequent turnover in senior management at that department.”

More than one-fifth of Yukoners do not have a family doctor, Cathers said, and wait times for surgeries and specialist appointments “continue to be beyond acceptable standards.

“This week saw another example of Yukoners falling through the cracks of the health care system, as a family felt compelled to resort to talking to media to try to get support for their child.”

He was referring to medical travel benefits being denied to the parents of a Dawson City child being treated for leukemia in Whitehorse.

The government has advised the family the decision is due to Dawson having a hospital and laboratory facilities – even though the boy has had to be medevaced from the town for treatment elsewhere.

“That the deputy minister of Health was tasked with making major changes to the system, including overseeing establishment of a new health authority, raises concerns about management of that project, and whether senior management changes in that department will result in important files being neglected,” Cathers said.

“Yukoners want assurances that the Yukon’s health services will not be negatively affected.

“This sort of turmoil at the senior level of government leadership causes upheaval, and uncertainty within the public service,” the YP critic added.

“These moves also continue the incoming premier’s track record of saying one thing, and then doing another.

“In this instance, he is failing to follow through on his commitment of stability that he promised when announcing he was running for the leadership of the Liberal party.”

You know what I’m concerned about?

I live in Brad’s riding but I don’t get to bill YG $20k/year for my per diems to drive to town.

Perhaps you should have the benefit of the doubt about your statement, but claiming all parties got similar or broad support is re-writing the election....
2021 - YP got 39.3%, LIBs got 32.4%, NDP got 28.2%

Compare that to when the Liberals got their majority...
2016 - LIBs got 39.4%, YP got 33.4%, NDP got 26.2%

When you look at the vote count in the last election each party got significant support across the board. But in the end the controlling party pretty much controls the budget (of course this sitting being different).
But normally the majority winner takes all - even though the other party’s had significant support. I think that 85% of the budget should be controlled by the winner with 10% controlled by the opposition and 5% by the third place party. That way each party gets to kickstart a project on their priority list and the people that voted for those parties aren’t shut out.
I think that kind of arrangement would benefit a lot more people in the territory and maybe keep some if the political backstabbing to a minimum.
Just saying.

When I posted on another forum about the need for the moderator to edit some of the nasty posts, I received several thumbs down. I still maintain it is needed and here we are again with one particular poster making a ridiculous personal comment that has no bearing on the topic.

@Patti Eyre
What exactly would your concern be regarding Mr. Cathers' hair? Perhaps you are one of the electorate who voted Trudeau in because of his appearance rather than his abilities? See what we got because of that logic?

@Patti Eyre, REALLY are we not beyond bullying by now? We teach children not to bully in school, but they are learning it from adults making comments like that.
Grow up.

Maybe the Minister needs to be cut off in middle of a crisis, maybe also would understand that we don't need this stress on top of the crisis stress.

Seems they select people who have the biggest issues that require very long stays away from home for medical to cut off and then try to justify their decision that breaks our Healthcare legislation.

If they don’t want to pay the subsidy then get the fricking services actually available in communities they live in. Some are special medicines that the community hospitals/nursing stations can not administer for patient and their protection should a bad reaction occur.

Lots of Yukoners have no choice but to go South and wait for…. They are not there by choice by any means.

Brad Cathers Chief of Staff (Michael Hale) during their dying days is now the senior Deputy for the Liberals. Cathers complains about even this. Seriously, that's not being a critic in government, that's being a sore looser as a critic.

Ranj has a wealth of experience as a leader, he is picking his team, that's it folks, nothing more.

Brad, find something real to discuss please. Like, don't you have any real policy issues or real ideas to contribute... anything...

@Patti Eyre: "We all saw Rudy Giuliani and his hair dye".
What you as a liberal didn't see was what Mayor Giuliani did for NYC. He was the best Mayor NYC had in years. Crime is up over a 1000% since he left. And don't be concerned about Brad's hair color. A little bit of hair color never hurt anyone. As a woman? What about you?

Legitimate concerns brought forward that were raised in the past by Hale’s former boss, Richard Mostyn.

Well fair enough I suppose, and that photo raises concerns about Mr Cathers hair dye products! We all saw Rudy Giuliani and his hair dye.

Pretty crazy how no one wants to work with Ranj.. and rumours of a MLA crossing the floor to get away from Ranj. One could only dream of Ranj's Premiership being over before it even begins!
