A 22-year-old Whitehorse man has been charged with second-degree murder after the stabbing death of his 20-year-old brother over the weekend.

Stanley Aleekuk was arrested and charged early Saturday morning after RCMP dispatchers received a 911 call at approximately 1:55.

The caller had requested an ambulance to go to the Logan subdivision.

Upon reaching the scene, police and emergency medical services personnel found a young man who had suffered stab wounds, police said this morning.

Edmund Aleekuk was transported to Whitehorse General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An RCMP spokesperson said another relative at the home placed the 911 call.

He said police officers located the suspect within an hour of their arrival at the scene, and that the suspect was "mildly combative" upon arrest.

Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the incident, police said.

Stanley Aleekuk remains in custody at the Whitehorse Correctional Centre.

He made an initial court appearance on Sunday and will next appear before the court on March 12.

Chief coroner Sharon Hanley said this morning an autopsy, conducted in Vancouver, will be complete by tomorrow.

The RCMP spokesperson said the case is Whitehorse's first murder of 2008.

It's also the first in the territory in several years.
