To assist with flood relief efforts, the Tourism Industry Association of the Yukon (TIA) has developed a sandbag shuttle service (or sandbag express).

The first one was scheduled to leave downtown Whitehorse this morning for flood-stricken areas where people are sandbagging.

Evening runs are planned as well. The exact routes and destinations will depend on where the need for sandbaggers is greatest.

Participants are asked to bring bug repellent, water, boots and, if possible, a spade or shovel. Each shift will be about three hours.

In a statement Monday afternoon, TIA described its plans as “a program to help co-ordinate the Yukon’s tourism industry’s resources to assist with this current emergency, and to help get Yukon volunteers to the parts of the Yukon that need the most help with sandbagging on a given day.”

Volunteers are asked to check the website for all of the details and updates. New shuttle dates and times will be added regularly at: https://tiayukon.com/sandbag-shuttle-service/

The territorial goverment is providing support to the shuttle service.

And how much did this sole source contract cost? TIA has made a lot during Covid. The people they represent not so much.

Great idea, maybe a few days late.
I would be interested to hear what the response was.
