Two men were injured in a downtown Whitehorse shooting on Saturday.

Two men were injured in a downtown Whitehorse shooting on Saturday.

Whitehorse RCMP received reports of gunfire at around 2 a.m.

Several officers were dispatched to the vicinity of Sixth Avenue, somewhere north of Main Street, police said.

They located a first victim, a man in his mid-twenties, believed to be from Outside.

The officers then located a second victim, a 19-year-old, also from outside the Yukon.

Both men are expected to survive, police said in a statement released Saturday.

They have not released the men’s names.

“At this time, we believe this is a targeted event; however, we are still greatly concerned, and encourage anyone with any information to please come forward,” said Sgt. Calista MacLeod.

“RCMP are taking this incident very seriously, and several specialized units, including the Major Crime Unit, General Investigation Section, and Forensic Identification Services, have been deployed to advance the investigation,” she said.

A spokesman for Whitehorse General Hospital would not confirm the victims’ conditions by press time this afternoon.

The hospital needs to obtain the consent from patients in order to release any information about them.

The hospital also requires patients’ names from media outlets making the inquiries.

Whitehorse RCMP were not able to provide more information this morning than what they included in Saturday’s press release.

It’s not clear, for instance, whether the men were approached by someone on foot or in a vehicle.

The incident was the second shooting in a public area of Whitehorse this year. Last February, a drive-by shooting injured a young woman near the Yukon Inn.

There was also a shooting that happened in mid-October in a condo on Range Road North.

No charges have been laid in any of the incidents.

Anyone with information about the latest shooting can contact police at 667-5555.

Lil' Regina is going as planned via the social engineers.
just us...good for decades.
victim Industry...get new clients daily.

Seems this country loooooves crime and violence, as they just voted in the spawn of the IDIOT that brought hug a thug to us.
Guess the gunfire at the Casa Loma wednesday as a targeted incident too?
Is "targeted" cop code for nothing to see here, fear not we are on the job?

Criminals will always have a way of getting firesticks, and us?
Collateral damage I suppose?
Anyone take a shot at me best do it well, as they will know how a bull moose feels in the fall.

Cannot wait for the refugees we apparently must have here, nothing like a clash of cultures importing hatred of our values.
How did this once great place devolve to such a sty?
You have read my "opinions" of why over the years, please share with me/us your opinions on why the sty.
Whitehamastan coming soon...speaking of targeted gunfire from "outside"

What's wrong Whitehorse, have you changed so much that you don't take care of the problem yourselves???

Lived there, loved it and can't believe that the most amazing people, the brightest and the most community minded would actually put up with this crap. Perhaps it's time to come back. Sounds like you have a bunch of garbage for leaders. Sorry to the ones who really care.

It is always strange how the RCMP sets things up, they use addicts and dealers against themselves through the use of turning dealers into informants... then they sit back and watch a power struggle that results in a massive increase in violent crimes....which of course is part and parcel of having a population with an inherent issue with drug/alcohol abuse mixed with the most important, untouched issue that nobody has mentioned...MENTAL ILLNESS..both users and dealers have shown a propensity to some sort of mental illness, having much to do with traumatic childhoods. Think about it.

You don't put the in front of "outside", you do put the in front of "Yukon."
Jargon.

This spike in drug related crime is directly related to how the Yukon's underworld is structured. First of all, the local supply just isn't keeping up with the Yukons obvious issue with drug use and dependency. What everyone is concentrated on is the violence and carelessness, the fear and the strain that it puts on the community. If you really want to address the issue, you need not look any further than mental illness. Both the users and dealers have shown an obvious past with undiagnosed mental illness....

Except for Wood Street school one block away. Or numerous day homes/day cares. Or a few dozen condo/apartments/homes.

Aw shucks Greorge, that's the nicest thing anyone's said to me in a while... however there is no way that I'm ever going to step into the public arena - too much vitriol spewed around the legislature for this Yukoner.

@Tom Stevens
"Outside" with capitol "O" has been de facto language for anyone that's a non-Yukoner for as long as I can recall. I do agree completely with your analysis that without Inside demand, there wouldn't be Outside supply. Succinctly put sir.

@north_of_60

Thanks, I new what the inference was, my comments were more related to the grammar in the sentence and the use of "Outside".

In response to your comment, I will add that drug dealers from the "outside" were likely targeted by established drug dealers from the "inside". Interesting enough, the "outside" folk do not come to the "inside" unless the "inside" has an appetite for the substances they sell. So the drug violence is a result of a demand situation that encourages the supply. The "outside" did not create the demand, only supplying it.

If you don't know what "Outside" refers to, then you're likely from there.

@ Tom -- I think this is their way of alluding to us that it's the typical "outside" drug dealers that have been prevalent lately.
But that's also letting us just assume things and maybe deterring from what might be another truth. Who knows.

I'm in bed at that hour so hopefully I'm not at risk.

Ok.. who writes this stuff.."They located a first victim, a man in his mid-twenties, believed to be from Outside" - Outside in the cold? First, not sure what the relevance is as to whether he is from the inside or the outside..really... sic

Well said .... If you're running for MLA I'm voting for you. A little honest, respectful, straight talk is something most foreign to our current government. If "right wing" is partially defined as tough on crime this Yukon party has switched to the far left long ago. You can only keep your head buried in the sand so long or in this case buried in RCMP managements reports. Time to wag the tail.... This year has seen too much tail (RCMP) wagging the dog (Gov) on policy. Other smaller districts have already demanded ( and received ) more members on the ground and weekly reports published in the paper to keep tabs of crime stats in areas of their town. So if Thomas Brewer or someone like minded ever heads to a political arena, I would see that as the only step towards dealing with our current situation.

I really want to write something about this..but I can not say it any better than Mr. Brewer.
I am tired to death of all this crap, tired of RCMP ineptitude and lenient courts.

Whitehorse is not so big that these guys can hide in a crowd. Someone here knows.

Reports like this are becoming routine. The time has passed for the kid glove treatment these organised criminal elements have been receiving. (BTW, the Criminal Code defines organised crime as 3 or more actors involved)

The rampant: petty thievery from our vehicles, residential and commercial B&E's, drive by shootings, attempted murders, and successful murders are all indicative of a drug scene unfettered by law enforcement and the judiciary.

It's high time our Minister of Justice Brad Cathers (omg, no wonder we're in a mess) step up and take the RCMP and the Judiciary to task in their complicitness in allowing these criminal ventures to exist and thrive here. Whaddya say Brad? How about making a statement at the very least.
