Senator Dan Lang has been asked to sponsor Bill C-19, the Ending the Long-gun Registry Act, and will lead off debate in the Senate at the end of this month.

After debate in the Senate, the bill will be reviewed by the Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs.

"I am very pleased to be given carriage of Bill C-19, an act to end the Long Gun Registry, for its final debate in the Senate,” said Lang, a Conservative.

"With so many Yukoners being affected by this legislation, I have a personal interest in its passage.”

The proposed legislation will repeal the requirement to register non-restricted firearms and destroy all data pertaining to the registration of long guns.

The Canadian Firearms Registry, under the control of the chief firearms officer, will maintain control over restricted and prohibited firearms.

Licensing requirements for the purchase or possession of firearms or ammunition will not be changed with the legislation.

These requirements include police background checks, firearms safety training course, examination and compliance with safe storage and transportation regulations.

"The Long Gun Registry has cost taxpayers billions of dollars and has been wasteful and ineffective,” said Lang.

"Canadians have spoken loud and clear, and I look forward to constructive debate throughout the final steps of this process.”

"We will no longer punish the law-abiding for the acts of the lawless,” said Yukon MP Ryan Leef, who spoke about the bill at length last week in the House of Commons.

"I am personally thrilled that our government is delivering on my campaign promise to Yukoners so quickly.”

Dont worry, the gravy train is coming to an end. When Canada's broke and no one has a job, do you think people will sit idly by while these useless senators make off like bandits? We don't need senators. We don't need MPs. You guys in Government drool at cutting everything that doesn't affect you. But just how you are shoving austerity down our throats it will be coming back your way 10 fold. Hey Dan and Mr Leef? You are not needed anymore. All one needs to do is go to your website and read your plans. All you do is parrot your party's interests anyway. Please enlighten us on what your actual purpose is? You don't represent us, and never have. If I wanted to read your minds I would go to your party's website.

I have seen the Senate in action on TV lately.

My impression- just get rid of it and save all that money.

The debates and discussion for new Acts are incredibly lame. In my opinion there is not much that actually comes out of it.

Ans when the Senate votes are important matters they vote along party lines as Mr. Lang has done in the past. Pretty pathetic- lets save that funding and send the senators home to continue their retirement.
