Second Avenue work to start this weekend

Work will begin this weekend on the repaving of a large part of Second Avenue.

Work will begin this weekend on the repaving of a large part of Second Avenue.

Skookum Asphalt, the city’s contractor, will be installing conduits at Wood Street and Main Street, and subsequently milling and repaving Second Avenue from Lowe Street to Ogilvie Street.

Working hours will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., the city said.

Roadwork will take place in sections, with the first being from Lowe Street to Main Street. The second section will take place between Main Street and Ogilvie Street.

Work is expected to be completed by the end of August, depending on the weather.

Traffic will be limited to one lane on one side of the street while the other is closed. Businesses will remain open.

All emergency vehicles and buses will be given priority access through the work site.

To allow for two-way traffic, parking will not be allowed on Second Avenue during the construction period.

“Please use alternate parking for the duration of the construction,” the city said. “Please obey traffic controllers and construction signage.

“We thank you for your patience and consideration during the construction period.”

More information is available by calling Skookum Asphalt at 668-6326 or the city’s engineering department at 668-8305.

Oh no, it will take 20 minutes to get to Porter Creek instead of 15 minutes.. boohoo. Who cares, when it is done, as long it is done efficiently.

Wait... so now both fire halls will have construction affecting their responses. Hope the city and YG save some money for the slam dunk lawsuit someone will have if a delayed response is caused from construction in front of all the fire halls in Whitehorse at the same time.

Has anyone heard of working through the night hours? Let’s just disrupt an already terrible traffic flow. We have minimal traffic infrastructure as it is and now you congest it even more. Give your damn heads a shake... we have light through almost all hours of the night. Why not 7pm to 7am? Whoever comes up with these plans is terribly overpaid and under qualified.
