Fifty households in Tagish were expected to have power restored this afternoon in the wake of a windstorm which caused outages in Whitehorse, Teslin and Tagish on Tuesday.

Power was restored in both Whitehorse and Teslin by 8 p.m. Tuesday, Laura Carlson, the communications advisor for Yukon Electrical Co. Ltd., said this morning.

About half of the community of Teslin was without power due to a tree falling on and bringing down a power line.

The entire community of Tagish lost power, again due to a tree toppling onto a large section of power lines.

Carlson said 350 Tagish customers had power restored by midnight last night.

Customers are asked to call Yukon Electrical immediately if they see any trees on lines or even trees that look like they might be threatening a line.

Carlson cautioned that people should not try to remove the tree themselves, as the line could still be energized and would pose a significant safety risk.

On Monday, an underground cable failed, causing power outages in the Granger and Copper Ridge areas of Whitehorse and small parts of Hillcrest.

Carlson said it took a bit longer to discover the cause of the outage because the wire is underground, but power has been rerouted and the cable will be repaired.
