A search is underway for a small plane carrying two passengers that failed to arrive in Mayo last night.

Search and rescue teams from Whitehorse, Yellowknife, N.W.T., and Comox, B.C. have been called in to find a twin-engine Britten Islander, owned by Sifton Air in Haines Junction.

The plane was due to arrive in Mayo from Hart Lake on Thursday evening, but never showed up.

The search operation began at 6 p.m. Thursday, according to a spokesman from the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in B.C.

He told the Star early this afternoon the search is being hampered by freezing rain and snowy condidtions.

So far, the search team includes a Twin Otter from the 440 squadron in Yellowknife, a Buffalo and a Cormorant flown by the 442 squadron in Comox and the local branch of the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association.

A second search team from Comox is on its way, according to one member of the 442 squadron still in B.C.

The names of the plane's passengers have not been released.
