NOT IN THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT – The Christmas tree at the CIBC in downtown Whitehorse was the site of a snatch-and-grab incident last week.

Scrooge hits Christmas tree in bank

It appears as if the Baby Yoda craze has people stooping to unexpected means to get one.

It appears as if the Baby Yoda craze has people stooping to unexpected means to get one.

The Christmas tree at the CIBC in downtown Whitehorse was the site of a most Grinch-like snatch-and-grab sometime last week.

The tree, which was auctioned off as part of a fundraising silent auction for the Yukon Hospital Foundation over the weekend, was two gifts lighter after a minor but very Scrooge-like theft.

Someone took a small Baby Yoda figurine that was tied to the tree, along with a Christmas bear.

Lany Marshall, a spokesperson for the CIBC branch, said Friday the value of the toys was approximately $30.

She was on vacation when the items vanished, and had limited information about the situation.

Marshall wasn’t too concerned about the loss, which stirred volumes of outrage on social media on Friday.

The toys were attached to the tree with zip ties, so whoever took them had to “work at it,” she said.

The bank has participated in the fundraising for 16 years with the tree, but it is ordinarily on display at the Yukon Government Main Administration Building, where security is available.

The ripple effects from the COVID-19 pandemic changed that tradition, Marshall said.

It’s the first time the tree has been displayed in the bank, and the first time such a theft has occurred.

She’s had offers to replace the items, but Marshall seemed more bemused than upset about the theft.

Some of the most valuable donations weren’t on the tree, as a precautionary measure, she said.

Foundation president Karen Forward said she was “disappointed” with the news.

MyOpinion2, settle down.
My Opinion[1] was very clearly making a joke. Learn to laugh a little.

The smallest bank heist in the history of the Northwest. It can only be the job of a petty thief. I say it was a do and dare challenge.

Car thefts, shoplifting..so much of it in Whitehorse, it seems to be the new normal.
People seem to steal anything, just because they can.. sometimes it shows up on FB Buy and Sells.. "bought yesterday, too large, tags still on it for 2X. can't return as I lost the receipt. Paid 50.98, asking for 40. OB0... Even if caught, petty theft has no penalties attached to it.

Lots of people seem to be racking up a lot of bad karma.

My opinion: Yes, they were busy helping clients instead of staring at the tree. Get over yourself.

Hopefully they were for a less fortunate child rather than for someone's own amusement.
