Schools, YG offices will be closed Friday

Sept. 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a federal statutory day.
Consequently, Yukon government offices, schools and courts will be closed.
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honours the survivors, families and communities impacted by residential schools in Canada and the continued intergenerational trauma faced by Indigenous communities across the country.
The federal statutory day applies to employees of the federal government and federally regulated industries.
This statutory day also applies to Yukon government employees, so territorial government offices, schools and courts will be closed.
This is the second straight week most public sector employees will have a day off. Most government operations were closed last Monday for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth, though the courts remained open.
Private sector employers can observe this Friday at their discretion, the government said.
From March 8 to April 30, it conducted a public engagement on creating a new statutory day to observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The survey also sought to understand the economic impact that a new statutory day might have on the local business community and economy.
Employees regulated by the Yukon’s Employment Standards Act are currently not entitled to this statutory day or pay in lieu.
Federal statutory holidays apply to federal employees, most federal Crown corporations and federally regulated private sector workplaces such as air transportation, banks and telecommunications.

I'm all for the "truth" part, but reconciliation should work both ways. And so far most of what I have heard over the years is lies, fables and nonsense. Now, its time for some truth.

Now that we are what some 4 weeks into school and there has been 3 or 4 days off…wouldn’t the truth and reconciliation make more sense in a school environment with teachers getting some Education on what it was all about otherwise it’s just another day to go play.

It's a wonder that YG employees don't follow the Yukon’s Employment Standards Act and have extra benefits. This article could also mention that most/all teachers have two PD days tacked on this week, so parents are having to figure out childcare for 3/5 days this week. Not sure why PD can't happen over the Christmas or Spring or Summer breaks.
