School warns students of stranger in area
Whitehorse RCMP have determined a man who was reported as acting suspiciously early Tuesday evening doesn't pose a threat.
Whitehorse RCMP have determined a man who was reported as acting suspiciously early Tuesday evening doesn't pose a threat.
Cpl. Grant MacDonald said this morning a report of a suspicious man came in at 5:48 p.m.
After starting to investigate, he said officers decided to take a precautionary measure and inform area schools of the report so that children could be warned not to talk to strangers.
Officers eventually were able to identify the individual and determine that he doesn't pose a threat.
Jack Hulland School principal Ken Taylor said this morning he was first contacted by a parent, then the RCMP yesterday about the stranger approaching students at the school.
The stranger was reportedly approaching students at school playgrounds in the area and asking the kids for their names and addresses.
'We made sure we gave them a heads up not to give out their name,' Taylor said.
RCMP also remained in the Porter Creek area throughout the day to watch for the stranger, he said.
Meanwhile, Elijah Smith Elementary School principal John Wright said today he had just received an e-mail about the situation and was planning to inform teachers about it.
While police have determined there was no danger posed, MacDonald said the situation serves as a good reminder during the start of the school year for students not to talk to strangers.
