Two Yukon seniors have become victim to fraud scams in the past six weeks, according to an RCMP press release.

One scam is what the police are calling a "romance scam.”

A senior was befriended by someone over the Internet.

After a month, the victim was asked to cash traveller's cheques and to forward the money via Western Union to a West African Country.

The second scam was a "lottery scam” received over the telephone.

Another senior believed that he had won money and a car in a lottery, but had to forward money via wire transfer in advance to supposedly secure his winnings.

The scammers targeted the senior again in a "recovery pitch” at a later date, the release read.

Both victims lost substantial amounts of money, which is not recoverable.

The RCMP are urging all seniors to use family resources, their bank, or seniors' organizations if they are suspicious of telephone or Internet fraud.
