As the Star first reported in January, it appears Yukoners are in for another major grocery shopping option – as early as the summer of 2017.

“Save-On-Foods is officially announcing its entry to the Yukon with a ground-breaking event in Yukon’s capital city on March 30,” the company said in a media advisory sent out Tuesday afternoon.

“The store will include a 42,000-square-foot Save-On-Foods store with the full Save-On-Foods offering, and an adjacent 12,000-square-foot wholesale store on the property.”

Construction of the grocery and wholesale stores is anticipated to begin later this year. It’s expected the Vancouver-based store would officially open its Whitehorse location in the summer of 2017.

As the Star reported two months ago, the Jim Pattison Group (which owns the Overwaitea Food Group under which Save-On falls) purchased two of the three remaining commercial lots at the Chilkoot Centre site at Quartz Road and Two Mile Hill.

The properties sit behind the Home Hardware store and include the former Ricky’s All Day Grill building.

The property with the former restaurant – at 1.4 hectares – had been listed at $4.1 million.

The other smaller property at 0.55 hectares was listed at $1.6 million.

The Chilkoot Centre site – which features stores like Walmart, Canadian Tire, Mark’s Work Wearhouse and two smaller multi-shop buildings – was purchased by Argus Properties Ltd. in the late 1990s, leading to the development of the retail centre.

This afternoon’s ground-breaking event was to include company president Darrell Jones, Mayor Dan Curtis and Rick Karp, the president of the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce.

Instead of another Starbucks, let's go with something else.

HORRAY for Save-On-Foods!! Not only am I and many of my friends more-than thrilled to know that Save On Foods is opening a store in the north but we all look very forward to getting our bang-for-the-buck. Within the past month, we've all noticed the heightened prices of grocery items, fruit and produce at Super-Store and other grocery stores. It'll be such a treat to get much more for LESS! Yahoo for Save on Foods opening in Whitehorse!

It tells you how much money Loblaws is making here at their other two stores when they can afford to lease a third empty store for years on end just so no competitor can open up in that location.

Who cares about another Starbucks - with the grocery savings we can afford more lattes. Hope they have a seniors discount.

Turkeys have often been selling for about $1.67/pound. With a new store we may see them selling for $1 per pound.

Save on Foods is nothing like Loblaws/Superstore....they have much better variety, excellent seafood, fresh produce and fruits. Quite a large selection of Bulk Foods, and an awesome Deli/Bakery. They are also usually open 8 am daily and most stores stay open til 9-10 pm. The Yukon will benefit greatly from Save On and with a wholesale store opening too...wow that's a bonus..!

You can't pay high wages and keep costs down at the same time.

Are we really to the point in Whitehorse where you can be standing at a Starbucks and be able to hit another Starbucks with a rock?

The facts on Mar 31, 2016 at 6:26 pm

The grocery store by the liquor store was in space lease by Loblaws, who decided that 2 stores were enough for them. Loblaws continue to lease that space. That has no bearing on whether another brand can do well. I don't give a tinkers what brand of coffee they fly in their coffee bar, if they even have one. But another outlet for local vegetables can only be a good thing.

So, they talk about a focus on local products yet their coffee shop will be yet another Starbucks. Yeah, I get there's likely a partnership contract but that doesn't bode well that they mean what they say when they give lip service to "local". We have great coffee roasters here and while I welcome the Save On Foods, I do not welcome another Starbucks.

I think this will be bad for diversity. Save-on has all the same low end brands as Super Store and will only serve to see us loose other competitors in the market that truly give us that diversity.

Great story for Yukon party! on Mar 30, 2016 at 6:31 pm

Where are always negative liberals and NDP on this issue? Yukon party creating more jobs and selection for Yukoners! Great story with facts for Yukoners.

Great location and especially for Canadian Tire and Save -on foods on Mar 30, 2016 at 3:36 pm

Way to go folks.
They will finally bring competition to the Yukon and the location is great for the two Canadian firms that can support each other.
