The Whitehorse Winterval Santa Claus Parade of Lights will return to Main Street at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The tree-lighting with Santa will take place at approximately 7 p.m. at the White Pass depot.

The event is sponsored by Victoria Gold Corp. and Banyan Gold, with the proceeds set to benefit family literacy through the Yukon Imagination Library.

“The team at Victoria Gold is delighted to partner alongside Banyan Gold as the Santa Parade’s title sponsors to help celebrate the festive season, while supporting increased family literacy and the fundraising efforts of the Yukon Imagination Library,” said John McConnell, Victoria Gold’s president and CEO.

“At Banyan Gold, we strongly believe that early family literacy contributes to success in school and in life and we are happy to be part of this event,” added Tara Christie, the company’s president and CEO , who is also the president of the Victoria Gold Yukon Student Encouragement Society and Every Student, Every Day.

That program works to help promote and increase regular student attendance in schools throughout the territory.

The parade will begin on Robert Service Way and work its way toward downtown, exiting the roundabout on Fourth Avenue, then turning left on Lambert Street and right on Sixth Avenue to proceed down Main Street to Front Street for the tree lighting.

More than 20 unique and creative floats sponsored and designed by local businesses and organizations will make up the parade.

Since 2007, the imagination library has provided more than 175,000 books to Yukon families in every community in the territory.

The books support early literacy and family engagement in pre-school learning.

I am so looking forward to the ‘people’ that have criticized this event putting their own money, their real names and their real time into the alternative event next year.

This was a nice event. The sponsors need to be appreciated and thanked.
If you post with your real name. I’ll do the same. Otherwise, we don’t need you in this community.

What about the climate change emergency? on Dec 3, 2022 at 9:18 pm

Nice waste of resources! How big is the carbon footprint on this event?

Why is there support for a parade featuring a cult figure that was created for commercial special interests?

I want a multicultural parade with ethic food for sale at the end if it.

@Josey Wales on Dec 1, 2022: It's simple, the governments don't want to offend the late coming religious demographic. Canada was founded on Christianity, and generously gave freedom of religion to all. But, now with the Marxist "woke" political parties that have taken over this Nation, Christianity has to sit in the back benches and just keep quite. JT will explain it all to you next time he comes up. Oh wait, has he been up here yet?

@Groucho d'North on Dec 1, 2022: Personally I would like to know why the City burns millions of Christmas lights on the trees for at least 6 months of the year 24/7. A couple years ago, I was sitting in TH in May month at 11 am - after several weeks of noticing they were on. At first I thought maybe it was the sun glinting off the bulbs. So I went to check it out. Sure enough they were burning. Why do they have to be burning 24 hours a day? Has somebody in the City works not figured out that they should be put on a timer? And why do they need to be burning during the months of May and June before somebody finally gets around to taking them off? Sure its nice to have those trees lit up. I support the program. But it must be costing tax payers thousands of unnecessary dollars to have them burning for so long. They can only be enjoyed during the dark hours. Smarten up City Hall.

Hey Groucho...love the diesel lights comment but.
Diesel powered, made in China Christmas lights...
Is a better illustration of your point, please accept this suggested improvement.
Carry on, many dragons out here to metaphorically slay.

Slide area...legit and fantastic point, glad ya caught that.

Ahhh… Josey - Just like the old days when Christianity first came to the scene the Romans saw it as a cult. Those days have returned once again - Christianity has been re-secularized. Except for its own operations as it sees fit the government is making sure there is no unity in the name of diversity.
This has always been the way to take power away from the people - Divide and conquer - No common ground… For anyone!

It’s nice though they kept Santa - He is the ultimate corporate figure head and communists and fascists are all about corporatist structures and of course there is the visual metaphor of the bright red suit and the fact that Santa is an anagram for SATAN - The true spirit of team Reds intent manifest in the likeness that of a Jolly, Old, Caucasian fatty. Hmmm…

Merry Corporatist Structure Holidays!

slide area? on Dec 2, 2022 at 9:30 am

so....why would you have a Christmas parade route through a 'Slide area, do no stop"? as the signs say along RS.

I'm curious if anybody has crunched the numbers for how much the festive lighting adds to the demand side of our strained electrical energy supply. Perhaps a competition for the best energy efficient holiday display would stimulate more walking the talk about fighting climate change. Diesel powered Xmas lights- who knew?

Winterval eh?
Civic wizards sanitized word for Christmas time?
Not once is the C word mentioned in this article.

Funny that...
Merry Christmas to all those that celebrate!

Like it use to be down both Fourth Avenue and Second Avenue. People at city Hall have got to change things all the time. Shipyards park ist not that great.
