Sale of crack to officer nets jail time

A Whitehorse man who sold crack to an undercover cop will serve 16 months in jail, a territorial court judge decided this month.
Last January, an undercover officer went to Jamie Brown's apartment in the McIntyre subdivision and asked to buy a rock of crack cocaine.
Brown sold the officer what he said was a one-gram rock, but actually only weighed a third of a gram.
The officer returned the next day, and paid $100 for another rock, and watched as Brown went to fetch the drug from a cupboard in his apartment.
With this information, the officer obtained a search warrant and investigators ultimately found nine rocks weighing a total of 2.4 grams (about 0.3 g each) in the cupboard, along with the $50 bills paid by the undercover cop.
Police also found another stash of drugs in one of the bedrooms, but Brown said those 110 rocks (weighing a total of 36 grams) were not his, and he didn't know they were in the apartment.
According to Judge Michael Cozens' summary of the case, another man has been charged in relation to the second batch of crack.
"Clearly, Mr. Brown was part of a larger organization that was distributing crack cocaine in the Yukon community,” Cozens noted.
"Mr. Brown was selling these drugs purely for commercial profit,” Cozens wrote in his reasons for sentencing. Although the man used crack, the judge noted, he was not selling purely to sustain his own habit.
But he also made a fairly early guilty plea, and "is clearly remorseful for his actions,” Cozens wrote.
Defence and Crown counsel made a joint submission on sentencing, advising the judge to give Brown 18 months, minus 60 days' credit for time already served.
Cozens accepted the submission, and returned the $1,000 bail deposit Brown paid for his release.

One Judge gives a man 16 months in jail for selling some crack and another Judge gives a women 12 months conditional for cold blooded murder. Something wrong with the system.

Kill someone in the Yukon and you get custody. Sell some crack and you are going to be locked up a long time. This is a great message that the RCMP and the judges send to our society. Yes I said RCMP, because they have power to try and force change in the justice system. I'm glad you are keeping us safe by getting such a small amount of drugs off our streets. "Mr. Brown was selling these drugs purely for commercial profit,” Wow, your observations are nothing short of amazing.

Excellent work! When it comes to crack and meth, throw the book at them. It is nice to see the RCMP getting press for the good they do in our community. Shut down those parasitical dealers of death and destruction.
I would like to see marijuana completely decriminalized so the police could focus their efforts on drugs that are more damaging than alcohol, rather than wasting time on pursuing marijuana 'criminals'. Marijuana is a far less dangerous and socially damaging drug than alcohol, and frankly I would like to see people have it as a healthier option to alcohol.
But I am 100% for going after the crack and meth dealers. That stuff ruins lives, and very quickly. Anyone who sells it is knowingly wrecking lives.
Best to you in reeling in the bigger fish that this drug dealer was associating with.
