‘Safe isolation sites’ planned for COVID patients

Ottawa has given the Yukon government more than $4 million to establish what’s being called “safe isolation sites” for those afflicted with COVID-19, the Star has learned.

By Tim Giilck on February 9, 2022

Ottawa has given the Yukon government more than $4 million to establish what’s being called “safe isolation sites” for those afflicted with COVID-19, the Star has learned.

Yukon MP Brendan Hanley made an announcement about the plan last Thursday – but no information was provided to Yukon news outlets.

Premier Sandy Silver co-hosted a COVID-19 media briefing that day, but said nothing about the planned isolation sites.

Nor was anything made available by the office of Dr. Catherine Elliott, the acting chief medical officer of health.

“Self-isolation is one of the most effective ways to help stop the spread of COVID-19,” Hanley’s release stated.

“However, for some people in Canada, crowded housing conditions and high costs can make it unsafe or impossible to self-isolate, putting themselves, their families and communities at risk through no fault of their own.”

The news release reported Hanley, speaking for Jean-Yves Duclos, the federal minister of Health, announcing more than $4 million for the territorial government to create and operate safe voluntary isolation sites in the territory.

“These sites help people who have COVID-19 — or have been exposed to it — access safe isolation accommodations to keep themselves and their community safe.”

The release does not provide a timeline for the facilities to open.

Two unspecified sites are to be selected, totalling 25 rooms in Whitehorse and Watson Lake.

To be exact, the federal government is providing $4,016,390 to the Yukon government.

Asked for more details on the plans Tuesday, Hanley told the Star, “As COVID-19 evolves, the pandemic continues to have a concerning impact on the lives of Canadians, as seen with the recent Omicron variant.

“Isolation of cases and contacts has been effective in protecting others from infection and in keeping our communities safe.

“When individuals are unable to safely isolate at home, the Safe Voluntary Isolation Sites Program will help to ensure that we can keep our loved ones safe.”

The Yukon government only acknowledged the pending isolation units after the Star questioned government representatives on Tuesday afternoon.

A government spokesperson replied that it was a federal announcement – and that Health and Social Services Minister Tracy-Anne McPhee had provided a comment in the federal release.

“Providing safe voluntary isolation sites will help eliminate barriers that can make it difficult for some Yukoners to properly self-isolate,” McPhee said.

“We know that self-isolation is an important public health measure that limits the spread of COVID-19 and its variants.

“By increasing access to safe places to self-isolate, we are in turn protecting Yukon families and communities.”

Yukon Party MLA Brad Cathers told the Star late this morning, “It’s very interesting this announcement hasn’t been talked about.”

He is particularly puzzled about the Yukon government not talking up the $4 million in funding – as is typical for such announcements.

Cathers said he wonders if the project will be awarded as a sole-source contract.

That means it would not be open to public bidding – but instead would go to a firm hand-picked by the government.

While that’s sometimes appropriate, Cathers said, such a decision is always open to more intense scrutiny.

On an overall basis, Cathers said, while the Yukon Party recognizes there might be some need for the service the new self-isolation units will provide, there are more pressing needs in the territorial health system that money could be used for.

“We’d like to see some more investments there,” he said.

Since the first safe voluntary isolation site opened in Toronto in September 2020, more than 15,000 people have sought access and support through one of the federally funded sites across the country.

Soooo let me get this straight… we can't find enough money to build some affordable apartment buildings for the working middle class poor, to help solve our housing problem or find and keep enough staff for our hospital… but we can find 4 million to create 25 COVID isolation sites????

@Nathan Living
Mr. Living you seem to be both supportive and critical of the protest efforts presently underway in our country. I had to read your comments a number of times to better understand your point(s).
There are a number of methods for the public to express their disfavour with a government, but these are contingent on if the government is listening or more to the point: Do they care or do they ignore these critics and march on with their agenda? I would say the latter has been the case with the federal response to COVID.
As an example there has been criticisms on the CERB which has left seniors across the country in dire straights because of the poor design of the program and the clawback of $2000 that was determined to be an 'advance' that was to be paid back - a little matter that was not made public until well after Canadians of all ages had signed up. Now our seniors don't drive 18 wheelers they can use to demonstrate their displeasure with the government so they have tried to use methods normally available to them - all of which have been ignored by this supposedly caring Liberal administration. The bought-off media do not report these stories very much so who knows how many seniors are suffering but want to be heard?
Protests escalate when there is no progress to resolve the issue at hand. The Trudeau Liberals are very well aware that Canadians are pissed at the heavy-handed methods used over the past couple of years, yet they do not show any empathy for the problems they have caused. For the past two years government ordered restrictions have put businesses out of work, increased the jobless ranks by tens of thousands, driven debt to the ceiling and caused great friction among the populace, yet when they talk about the trucker protest, the truckers are accused of impacting the Canadian economy, too late Justin, the damage has been done...by your hand. For protests to have any meaning or value, the governments must have a minimum of respect for those doing the protesting and work to resolve the issues. Instead we are getting a temper tantrum and school-yard threats from an egotistical PM who does not want to see the writing on the wall.

Up 10 Down 74

Nathan Living on Feb 11, 2022 at 8:39 pm

So, a minority of truckers think they are the barometer of Canadian political change and they have shutdown Ottawa and significant international trade until Trudeau resigns? What is the truckers threshold for demanding that a different political party assumes power? I guess we can develop a system where trucker protests replaces democratic elections.

Locally, at least there was a legal challenge to government covid measures. Hats off to Mercy trucking, the Swede, the first nations person who challenged the government on his right to shoot wolves withn city limits- and others who spent money on their court challenge.

Most people are tired of covid but rest assured the government and their medical advisers will relax things sooner than later.
Let's prepare for a healthy future without nastiness and violence.

Some of y’all are providing valuable insight into the paranoid hysteria that collapses societies. Mostly only read about it in a historical context and thought our modern age of information somewhat immune to it. Never really occurred to me that people would do it to themselves so willingly.

Somewhere tied up in arrogance, faith, fear and entitlement is the soul of democracy. It’s decidedly odd that the politics of law and order, reasonable governance and majority rule that defined the conservative movement have been abandoned as soon as the majority no longer looks the way they want it to.

That said, Trudeau #2 is a disgrace in a similar way that Bush #2 was. Hollow, self-serving and ultimately spineless effigies of their fathers. Our collective hunger for the comfort of a sequel outpacing any real consideration for their fitness to govern. Bending to the loudest voice, unable to brave the storm for longer than the media’s three-week cycles of bobble-headed hyperfocus. The betrayal of even the illusion of fair democracy brought to you by the obvious fact that a few powerful families and connections to big money can run the show.

Not a fan of the extremes from any perspective. I miss the Canada of the middle road. It’s such a shame to lose that to a political class pandering to their respective base. By their example, a whole generation of leadership has shown it is important to win at all costs even as you tear down all sense of public trust.

We’ve sold ourselves so cheaply. For decades of broken promises, meaningless fluff and a second-hand society on the brink of collapsing under the weight of its own fragility and ignorance.

We humans are much more stupid and gullible than we would like to believe. Some times, you have to step back and appreciate the absurdity of it all.

It's time to stop playing around here. We have a limited opportunity to stop our beloved home and native land from slipping into some form of hyper-techno-communism just like the china whose "basic dictatorship" is so admired by Justin and some others who seem to love the intoxicating feeling of having an entire territory bowing in obedience to their every whim and command..

Except, there is this annoying fringe element, which is not going away and is growing by the day, and is becoming increasingly non-compliant. Perhaps, they can be found with a convenient case of the common covid and institutionalized in our wonderful re-education centers, erm sorry, covid quarantine facilities, where tragically, they failed to respond to our best efforts and the remesdivr and the ventilator snuffed their pathetic little lives for the common good.. So tragic. Our thoughts are with the family and friends...

Covid War Spending.

It's time to step back and compare Canada's covid war debt to Britain's debt from WWI and WWII.

Our government is not even contemplating a balanced budget anytime soon yet it wasted money on the election and so many other things with this $4 million give away as an example.

Time to compare Canada's deficit to Britain's war debt and show how long it took to deal with it.

There are people who need this service. Regardless of who gets the financial gain from the contract, there are hundreds of Yukoners who do not have a place where they can isolate without exposing members of their family to a potentially deadly disease. Any person has the right to refuse to do this but if you're choosing to self isolate, it would be a tremendous relief to know that you can do it safely.

I thought Canada just quit apologizing for Japanese internment camps and Germany is still paying for survivors of Jewish typhus camps (the official excuse for incarcerating citizens in concentration camps)? I hope those who let these places get built will be interred there. Maybe then they will finally, finally, finally understand what the so called Covid emergency is all about! An emergency with hardly any deaths. An emergency during which no additional money was used to update the health care system, no adding of ICU beds, no adding of staff, no use of cheap, working medication against Covid (Ivermectin, eg.). Crimes against Humanity - perpetrated by government officials and those who stand by and let it happen.

It's not surprising that most commenters here seem to have lost all faith in government officials. Some think that's a tragedy, but right now it may be a healthy attitude to fix the citizen vs public servant relationship. That might take a couple generations though.

Would there be any trust left, the announcement would not raise any flags other than maybe the question:
Are Safe-Isolation Sites REALY safe?
If you think being thrown into a plastic-wrapped accommodation, likely with air-duct heating and ventilation spreading any viruses evenly, no windows to open, no UV exposure, bad food and a depressing atmosphere and possible inhuman treatment, together with a mix of people at various infection stages, will be to anyones betterment, think again.
Viruses gonna virus.
But if your goal is Zero-Covid [which is a crazy idea], then the Australian camp approach might work better.
It's the closest to being isolated in your cabin at the lake. [sarcasm]

What could have been done with $4 million?
Well, it would have bought a whole stack of Vitamin D, C, Zink, Antioxidants maybe even some of the re-purposed approved and cheap drugs that conscious doc use around the world to keep patients out of hospitals and off ventilators. [i.e. Zelenko Protocol]
Maybe the money could have been used to actually find out the immune status of patients, if they already have immunity [i.e. no need for experimental mRNA gene therapies] or if they are lacking above mentioned Vitamin D, which most people do up here, and which is absolutely essential to fend of infections of any kind.
Or to make sure, in the future, we do not mix infectious patients with regular hospital patients, so that we don't need two weeks [years] to flatten the curve? Duh!

You can be sure that are our newly totalitarian Yukon politicians will do the same. It's time for a general uprising.
Meanwhile, much of the rest of the world has declared that covid is now over or endemic, the omicron variant is mild, and should be treated like the flu, i.e. stay home if you're sick, and that's all.

By the way, that $4,000,000 would be much more helpful towards new affordable housing. Folks won't be so crowded in their homes if they have better housing options in the first place.

The simple question to know if the intentions here are nefarious, is what kind of "rooms" will these be?
Will they be a converted hotel or apartment building?
Will they be trailers in a large open space with room for expansion and security?

Not to sound paranoid, but there are countries that have covid prisons and our leader shares his admiration for these countries openly. Add to this that the announcement was from Hanley, the harbinger of authoritarianism.

For the last 650+ days, the Yukon has been able to go about life while any cases that have arisen have managed to properly self-isolate and recover in their homes, apartments or cabins without any runaway infection. As time has passed, so has the imminent danger of the covid-19 virus, it has mutated into something similar to the common cold

So, while the rest of the planet indicates an end to the pandemic and the restrictions related to it, one has to ask why the Yukon and Canadian governments continue down the covid-19 path. The state of emergency?
It's all about the money, seemingly unlimited amounts of fed and provincial money that is doled out without scrutiny or oversight.

Here's another 4 million, Sandy, thanks again for the endorsement last fall!

Are they looking at taking covid patients, isolating them and putting them into some sort of camp?
Sounds familiar doesn't it?

This sounds like a plum for NVD! I mean, a job. Ahem. Maybe Kobyashi Zedda can get their fingers in the pickle jar too.
