A well-known Whitehorse contractor died in a roll-over Thursday evening on the Klondike Highway outside of Dawson City.
Glenn Mickey, 44, was driving north 60 kilometres south of Dawson when his semi-tractor unit went off the right side of the road, Dawson RCMP said this morning.
The vehicle rolled off the highway and landed on its roof, police said. It took firefighters from Dawson City and Klondike Valley about 2 1/2 hours to extract him from the mangled wreckage.
The accident occurred at around 9 p.m., said Dawson RCMP Sgt. Tim Ashmore.
Police arrived on the scene at approximately 9:25 after having received a call.
Mickey was the only person in the vehicle and died at the scene.
The tractor Mickey was driving had a flat deck with a cherry picker on the back, police sid.
The causes of the accident are still unknown.
The vehicle went off the road near kilometer 656 of the Klondike Highway, along the Tintina Trench stretch.
Cpl. Dan Gaudet, who attended the accident, said the road was dry and there were no major visibility problems due to forest fire smoke.
RCMP are continuing to investigate the roll-over.
The Coroner's Service and the territorial Occupational Health and Safety Board will also be investigating the accident, Ashmore said.
A member of the Mickey family asked this morning that the media respect their privacy during their time of grieving.
