Despite the heavy overnight rainfall, Robert Service Way and the Millennium Trail reopened at 7 a.m. today.

It had been closed  Sunday morning after the slope scanner had detected some earth movement, and even greater movement that afternoon.

The shifting, combined with the predicted heavy rain, prompted city officials to keep the artery closed Monday.

Crews examined the escarpment early this morning and the decision was made to reopen the route.

“Road users are asked to drive to conditions and be mindful of others,” the city said.

Robert Service Way was closed for five weeks after a major slide on April 8 blocked much of it with debris.

It was later opened to 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. accessibility before it recently opened around the clock.

Nathen, you are correct in saying more should be done to mitigate the problem. Back when the WhitePass had the railway coming to town I'm sure they spent a ton of money dealing with the clay cliffs. Sad that those nasty capitalist who were in business to make a profit which forced them to maintain the clay bank are now gone and it is now a problem for the tax payer.

I think the City should have undertaken more extensive work last year and this year similar to the work recently completed.

There may be emergency funding from both the federal and territorial governments but our city tax money should be used on work that reduces complete Robert Service Way closures.

I am thankful the City is trying to keep the South Access open as much as they can even though it scares me to drive through there now seeing how wet it is in some spots. I understand this is a difficult one for the City - there is no easy answer and a lot of public pressure. Please know I, for one, support your efforts.

At this point I suggest the City just close the road and build their fantasy "Town Square". Because stuff that dosen't matter seems to be the priority of the administration. Changing street names comes to mind. And then all the hipsters can rejoice with their manbuns and starbux grass fed, cruelty free, non GMO frappuccinos.
