The Yukon T1D Support Network has launched its Boulevard of Hope at the top of Robert Service Way in Whitehorse.

It’s meant to raise awareness for Yukoners living with Type 1 diabetes, a life-threatening auto-immune disease affecting all ages.

Thirty-five community-sponsored trees, lit up in blue (the Type 1 diabetes ribbon awareness colour), will be in place for all of January.

The number of trees on display represents the approximate $3,500 cost for one continuous glucose monitor per Yukoner per year.

“Our goal to create awareness about T1D and fundraise for Yukoners living with the disease led to a new approach that engages, while promoting health and safety, within the context of a pandemic world,” said Marney Paradis, the Yukon T1D Support Network’s president.

“As always, our volunteer, not-for-profit organization is extremely grateful for the generous support of local businesses and community partners, which continually step up to help our advocacy and in the case of the Boulevard of Hope, raise funds to educate.”

Event co-founder Amanda Leslie approached Jill Nash, the network’s vice-president in late August 2020 with the concept.

Together, they reached out for sponsorship support and co-ordinated the initiative’s logistics over the course of the fall.

“As a brand-new initiative here in the Yukon, we had a blank page to work from, which was both invigorating and challenging, as we navigated how to bring the Boulevard of Hope to life with our combined volunteer resources,” said Leslie, who has managed fundraising events in the territory for almost two decades.

“Jill and the Yukon T1D Support Network volunteers are a force of nature in their dedication and enthusiasm, and we are simply delighted it has all come together to literally lighten the spirits of Yukoners during January’s dark days, while benefitting Yukoners living with Type 1 diabetes.”

The Boulevard of Hope was made possible by the City of Whitehorse, presenting sponsor Kilrich Building Centres, power partners ATCO Electric Yukon and Arcrite Northern Ltd., North Star Mini Storage, and Whitewater Homes. The were complemented by 35 local businesses and organizations, which sponsored a tree.

Media partners were the Star and CKRW, The Rush.
