The Yukon’s highway borders began transitioning away from 24/7 surveillance today, as fewer people are expected to travel by road into the territory in the winter months.

The borders at the Alaska Highway and Junction 37 will be patrolled by officers from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Travellers arriving outside of those hours will have to sign a declaration and submit their self-isolation plan at an on-site kiosk.

“There will be signs in place to inform travellers of this requirement and kiosks in place for visitors to put their declarations into,” Community Services Minister John Streicker said Wednesday afternoon.

The change was announced during a COVID-19 media update with Streicker and Dr. Brendan Hanley, the chief medical officer.

The COVID-19 information station on the Alaska Highway in Whitehorse also closed this week.

“Let me be clear: it will continue to be the law under the Civil Emergency Measures Act, CEMA, to declare yourself if you’re arriving from a jurisdiction outside of B.C., N.W.T., or Nunavut, even outside of these daytime hours,” Streicker said.

“If you intentionally provide incorrect information or do not stop and declare yourself as required, it is considered an offence under CEMA and individuals will be charged.”

Streicker said travel into the Yukon by road has been noticeably dwindling, and travellers usually cross the border between mid-morning and late afternoon.

“We think that the number of travellers that will be passing through while it is staffed will be the preponderance of the travellers,” Streicker said.

New charges were laid under CEMA on Tuesday. One person was charged with failing to provide a declaration and failing to comply with a self-isolation order. There have now been 17 charges laid under CEMA.

Hanley also provided an update on the individual who was hospitalized with COVID-19 last weekend in Whitehorse.

The individual, who is a resident of an unidentified jurisdiction outside of the Yukon and fell ill while visiting the territory, is stable and improving.

Hanley said the individual “did everything right,” as they were not ill when they entered the Yukon and sought care once symptoms began.

“Within hours of receiving the positive test result on Friday morning, YCDC (Yukon Communicable Disease Control) had interviewed the individual and their close contacts,” Hanley said.

“After reviewing the information, it was determined the risk of exposure to others was small, and no public notifications would be required.”

Hanley said the person was assessed at the emergency department at Whitehorse General Hospital, and all infection control measures were carried out.

“The hospital was fully prepared to care for any individual with COVID, and hospital staff cared for the individual with the usual calm and high standard of care that the hospital prides itself in,” Hanley said.

He said he won’t share information on where the individual travelled here from, to protect their privacy.

Updated enforcement statistics show the Yukon government has received 857 complaints, 478 of which involve the failure to self-isolate and 331 the failure to transit through the Yukon in 24 hours.

A total of 50,510 travellers have entered the Yukon since border restrictions came into place last spring.

Resident travellers account for 10,705, while B.C. residents account for 10,601.

There are "no officers" Alaska Highway B.C./Yukon Border in WL. They have staff members there, but no enforcement officers, no patrolling being done.
It is staff they hired for October 1st (not even previous YG employees) to take declarations from 9am til 6pm. After those hours it is on the honor system....

One has to be in the Kluane lake area to witness the U.S. traffic happening 24/7.
Non stop.

Wow talk about hypocrites posting comments about one side of the political spectrum or the other. How easily some Cons on here forget under Harper he was wanting people to rat out people to his government. I take it you are very forgetful or you have your blinders on when it suits you.

I've seen countless people from all over the states in the trailer park where I reside not wearing a mask, not self isolating and in the Yukon for longer than the required time! It's only a matter of time before we get hit! And to not count the new case as a Yukon case is a way to keep the border open for tourism! Really how stupid as what's the cost to peoples safety? 1 0r 2,3,4 deaths. Who puts or even can put the price on even one life ? Smarten up politicians!

reply to @JC. Jc your losing it as I never said anything about wearing masks all the time in my post. They say you're the last to know.

The Crazy Covid Circus continues unabated. Will the LIB ever stop beating this dead horse? Not Likely; they've had a taste of fear mongered dictatorship and they won't give it up easily.

Hey Guncache, please don’t equate phoning an official Yukon government tip line to report possible Covid-19 travel restriction violators with “neighbours turning in neighbours“ in Nazi Germany. The former are concerned about public safety, although perhaps sometimes overzealous. The latter were complicit in the extinction of 6 million Jews, as well as many thousands of others, for no crime other than the religious faith to which they were born, their ethnicity, their sexual orientation, or other arbitrary factors. You can express your views about the Covid-19 measures without minimizing one of the most horrible eras of human history.

Guncache, ratting on ones friends and neighbors is just a normal tactic for left wing political parties. It's called Communism. And it works for them. Remember citizens, especially you young ones, you can vote your way into socialism, but will have to fight your way out. Take that from one who spent several years trying to keep them out of Canada - but failed.

Buford, I don't oppose wearing masks as a defense against the virus when it's necessary. I guess it's a good idea. But just as a caution, that too much mask wearing isn't healthy either. They are breathing their own germs back into their own bodies. So, wear them when you must but take them off when you don't. Don't need masks while out walking or driving alone. Be sensible.

Wow, 857 squealers. Not unlike Nazi Germany with neighbours turning in neighbours. I know an Alaskan that is a resident here and has Alaska plates on their vehicle while they go through the residency process. They have had to put a sign on their vehicle denoting they live here as they have been harassesd by some ignorant people.

Again in his weekly update no mention of masks save for kids may wear some during trick or treating at Halloween. The rest of the world is lauding mask use as the #1 defense against the virus until such time as a vaccine is developed and distributed.

So, how many people will actually read the declaration before signing? None. But they will have a high income gov worker to check the declarations every day. Another great brilliant plan Libs.
