A Riverdale landlord is probably wishing he'd just received a belated lump of Christmas coal after a vacating tenant trashed his property.

The landlord had already handed over the outgoing tenant's damage deposit because there hadn't been any damage at that point, Whitehorse RCMP spokesman Sgt. John Sutherland said today.

But the next time the landlord checked the Alsek Road rental home on Wednesday, he discovered kicked-in walls sporting spray paint, a destroyed bathroom and smashed windows.

The investigating officer estimated the structural carnage to be in the tens of thousands of dollars, said Sutherland.

Police continue to investigate.

It's expected internal disciplinary measures instead of criminal charges will be used at the Whitehorse Correctional Centre after a television was smashed and a mattress was set on fire.

The damage occurred last Sunday, but wasn't reported to the RCMP until New Year's Eve.

As well, police continue to investigate a sexual assault in which a young woman woke up to find a man she knew touching her. No one has been arrested yet. Alcohol was involved, Sutherland said.

Alcohol was likely involved in the several domestic assaults reported to the RCMP on New Year's Day.

No one was seriously injured in any of the three assaults, and one man has been remanded into custody until next week. Investigations must be completed in the other two cases before charges can be laid.

Police suspect they may be looking for the same culprit in two different cases after car tires were slashed in Riverdale. In one incident, a tire on a car parked in the 100 Lewes Blvd. parking lot was reported slashed shortly after noon Thursday.

About two hours later, a Teslin Road resident reported a tire slashed and items stolen. The thief had entered the car through an unlocked passenger door and took some change and a paint ball gun.

Downtown on Wood Street, a truck door was damaged when someone took a screwdriver to the lock to open it. CDs and a stereo face plate were lifted.
