A Whitehorse man is dead following a snowmobile accident on Good Friday along the South Klondike Highway.
The driver has been charged with impaired driving causing death.
Shannon Meawasige, a 38-year-old originally from the Serpent River First Nation in Ontario, died at the scene near the Spirit Lake Lodge when emergency response personnel from Carcross were unable to revive him, says an RCMP press release issued Monday.
Wayne Leigh Noseworthy, a 35-year-old Carcross resident, has been charged with impaired driving causing death.
He was held in custody pending the outcome of a court appearance today.
Noseworthy received minor injuries.
He was taken to Whitehorse General Hospital but was later released, says the news release.
RCMP Cpl. Geoff Peters, commander of the Carcross detachment, said in an interview this morning the accident happened about one kilometre south of the Spirit Lake Lodge, or five kilometres north of Carcross.
"I looks like they were just out for a snowmobile drive and they were on the same machine and they drove over a bit of an embankment that dropped into the ditch on the side of the road,” Peters explained.
"It was five or six feet high,” he added. "They kind of misjudged the height and it went end over end on top of him.
"It was not a severe height like 20 or 30 feet, but it was high enough that the machine was able to flip.”

Rollover bars would break some rolls.
Rollover bars save lives.
Manufacturers need to create rollover bars for quads, snow machines; all 4-wheeled adventure machines.
I'm sorry another has passed; I hope it is our last.

I agree with Trista and if it could be changed I would wave my wand and take away all the grief and hurt my family is feeling. All we can do is pay our respects to a great friend, brother and dad. Let's do what Mosho would have wanted and celebrate the adventurous life that Shannon Meawasige lived. Love you Mosh until we meet again RIP!! Horns up buddy!! Xoxo chris and nicole

This article makes it sound really bad on Leigh. I went to the scene and the police officer explained to me the details of the incident. It is definitely tragic and I don't condone drinking and driving at all, but this was something that could have happened whether they had been drinking or not. Just a fluke way the sled tipped off what should have been a manageable embankment. Shannon's family and close friends lay no blame on Leigh. Shannon loved Leigh like a brother, and if Shannon loved him then we do too.

No jail time, or fines can make up for tragedies like this, we see it again and again.
How many people have to die before they learn not to drive impaired?
I just met Shannon two weeks ago..nice guy. I'm sorry, RIP
