A 43-year-old man whose all-terrain vehicle (ATV) went over an embankment was found dead near Carmacks Tuesday afternoon.
At approximately 4:47 p.m., the RCMP Carmacks detachment received a report from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria saying an emergency locator beacon had been activated in the area, police said Wednesday afternoon.
Map co-ordinates obtained from the beacon led police and Yukon Wildland Fire Management personnel to a location at Frenchman Lake.
The Whitehorse man was discovered trapped beneath his ATV at approximately 7:28 p.m.
The preliminary investigation indicates alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the accident and the death is not being treated as suspicious.
The man's name is not being released on the request of his family, police said.
Cpl. Wayne Gork, an RCMP Carmacks spokesman, said the type of emergency locator beacon used must be user-activated, indicating that the man activated it himself.
Gork said that given the isolated location of Carmacks and its surrounding area, hikers and other who enter the wilderness should carry a beacon or satellite phone.
Police also wish to remind the public to exercise caution when operating ATVs and to ride with a partner in isolated areas for safety.
Owners of ATVs should also obtain the proper training on their use with courses through the Canada Safety Council, police advise.
