Rezoning clears way for housing

On Monday, city council gave third and final reading of the bylaws required to rezone two parcels of First Nation land to provide for new affordable housing.
The Ta’an Kwach’an Council of Lake Laberge is planning to bring on 49 rental housing units with the proposed development.
The parcels were rezoned from future planning to comprehensive residential townhouse.
Ta’an Chief Amanda Leas described the initiative when she appeared before council earlier this fall as the first and largest housing commitment since the First Nation signed off on its land claim and self-government agreements 20 years ago.
One parcel measuring approximately one hectare in size is located in Whistle Bend, north of Witch Hazel Drive.
It’s expected the parcel will provide for 24 affordable townhouses.
The other parcel, measuring approximately 2.1 hectares, is located on the west side of the Alaska Highway, directly across from Wann Road, and is essentially an extension of Birch Street.
It’s expected the land will provide for 25 affordable housing units.
Leas explained to council the intent is to first of all provide rental housing to its citizens, but the First Nation will provide housing to non-First Nation residents if the opportunity arises.

I live in Riverdale and own a home there for more than 20 years. I am surrounded by rental homes (some renting 2 units, up and down). I have enjoyed and quite frankly like many of my rental neighbours more than some of the permanent owners around me. I think rentals and affordable housing should be integrated throughout the city.
I do worry about a 300 unit rental development, there is lots of information on how that worked in larger urban centres, not good.

Overpopulation is already a problem. It's out of control. Think about lineups at the grocery store if oil and gas exploration goes ahead. The most shameful thing I saw was the poster image of a young man about 24 complaining he didn't have a house. We are turning into a society of free loaders.

I have no issue with affordable housing. That being said, if the owner allows the building and the property to become dirty and run down, then we’ve got a ghetto in the making.

Stop spreading the problem.. unwanted renters planted all over the city, keep that to one part that's easily controlled!

@MacGuyver: The zenith of rental apartment construction & reasonable rental rates was the 70s. It was also a great time for Canada, economically speaking. The option of renting wasn’t contributing to poverty. You’re not concerned about rentals perpetuating poverty now. You’re pissed off that rentals are coming to YOUR neighbourhood.

Maybe the housing shortage is a good thing. I’m tired of the new Sunday morning traffic. We’re full.

Great, more rental housing. You are just continuing the cycle of poverty with this nonsense and you know it. "You will own nothing and be happy".
